Feds move forward with Maine offshore wind

PORTLAND — The federal government is proceeding with an environmental impact study and seeking to determine if there are competing interests following a Norwegian company's proposal for a deep-water wind turbine pilot project 12 miles off the coast of Maine.

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management is seeking public comment on environmental issues related to the so-called Hywind Maine proposal by Statoil North America.

Statoil's unsolicited pilot application for a commercial wind energy lease calls for a 12-megawatt production capacity through four wind turbines. The request covers a 22-square-mile area a dozen miles off Boothbay Harbor.

Interior Department Deputy Secretary David Hayes said today that Statoil's interest in partnering with Maine and federal officials on wind power reconfirms the Obama administration's "all-of-the-above" energy strategy.
