A multi-restaurant eatery called the Freeport Public Market will open at noon Thursday in Freeport.

The market will be anchored by an Amato’s restaurant and include kiosks for Kamasouptra, Peachy’s Smoothie and Juice Bar, and Café Crêpe, all locally owned and operated, said the Freeport Public Market’s principal owner, Godfrey Wood.

“We were looking for something where we could be a partnership of restaurants,” he said.

Wood, a Falmouth resident who served for 15 years as CEO of the Portland Regional Chamber, left the organization in 2012 to become managing owner of a restaurant group that includes Johnny Rockets franchises in Freeport and at the Maine Mall in South Portland, and Bonos Pizzeria & Grille in South Portland.

In April 2013, Wood also became executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Portland.

Wood said he has applied for a beer and wine license for his new venture and expects it will be approved by Thursday.

The Freeport Public Market is at 20 Bow St., near the entrance to the Freeport Village Station outdoor mall, at the site of the former Fresh Batch restaurant. Wood said Fresh Batch did very good business at that location. His Johnny Rockets restaurant is nearby, within the Freeport Village Station complex of stores.

The Freeport Public Market building measures about 3,400 square feet. It will have indoor seating for about 40 people, and a patio with 40 to 45 additional seats, Wood said.

Each of the first 100 customers on Thursday will receive a free slice of pizza from Amato’s, he said.
