James Goodrich, former head of Bath Iron Works, dies at 99

FALMOUTH — James Franklin Goodrich, a former chairman, president and CEO of Bath Iron Works and undersecretary of the U.S. Navy under President Ronald Reagan, has died at the age of 99.

His wife, Helen Goodrich, said he died Monday at their condominium in Falmouth.

Goodrich was president and CEO of Bath Iron Works from 1965 to 1975 before serving as chairman until his retirement in 1978.

Three years later, Reagan chose him to become undersecretary of the Navy to rebuild a 600-ship Navy.

Before joining BIW, Goodrich worked for Todd-Pacific Shipyards in Tacoma, Wash. He was also a co-founder of a commercial fishing company after World War II that was involved in the Alaska king crab industry.

Goodrich is survived by his wife of 72 years and three children.
