Australian themed steakhouse restaurant, Outback Steakhouse, has left Maine after closing its South Portland location.

"This is a business decision based on the performance of the restaurant and is not a reflection of the hard work and dedication of our employees," the company said in a statement.
A company spokeswoman refused to say how many employees were affected by the closing or which day the restaurant shuttered.
The 147 Western Avenue location was Outback's only restaurant in Maine. Now, the closest places to get Outback Steakhouse's famous Bloomin' Onion appetizer are the Massachusetts towns of Methuen and Peabody, the company said.
The spokeswoman declined to say if Outback had previously had any other locations in Maine.
Outback Steakhouse is owned by Bloomin' Brands, which also owns Carrabba’s Italian Grill, Bonefish Grill, Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse and Wine Bar and Roy’s.
As of March 31, the company owned 1,247 restaurants and had 195 restaurants operating under a franchise or joint ventures across 49 states and 21 countries and territories internationally.
