Cost of gas in Maine jumps nearly 14 cents in one week

PORTLAND – The cost of a gallon of gas in Maine has jumped nearly 14 cents in just the past week.

MaineGasPrices.com reported Monday that the average retail cost of gas has risen to $3.70 a gallon, based on a survey of more than 1,200 gas stations in the state.

The price is 16 cents a gallon higher than a month ago and 11 cents higher than a year ago.

GasBuddy.com, which operates MaineGasPrices.com and more than 250 similar price-tracking websites, said prices nationwide have risen more than 14 cents a gallon in the past week, to $3.48.

A company analyst said rising oil prices have put upward pressure on gasoline prices, with little relief in sight.

But demand for core capital goods, a category considered a proxy for business investment plans, dipped 0.3 percent in December following strong gains of 3.3 percent in November and 3 percent in October.

For the year, total factory orders rose 3 percent to $5.66 trillion.

This reflected a slowing in the manufacturing sector following an 11.8 percent rise in orders in 2011.

The Happy Meals will come with seven pieces of Fish McBites, French fries, apple slices and a drink.

Fish McBites, which are fried pieces of fish, will use the same Alaska pollock used in the fast-food chain’s Filet-O-Fish.

Boeing asks FAA permission to fly test flights of its 787

SEATTLE – Boeing Co. said Monday that it has asked the Federal Aviation Administration for permission to fly test flights of its 787 Dreamliner.

The FAA said it is evaluating the request.

The initial flight tests will gather data on the operation of the troubled lithium ion battery system, the cause of the worldwide fleet grounding that’s now into its third week.

But 787 passenger flights won’t resume soon. In airline service, the Dreamliner is still likely to stay grounded for weeks, if not months, according to two sources with knowledge of the matter.

Even when Boeing arrives at a workable fix, its engineers will have to design, build and thoroughly test the solution.
