NEW YORK – Stocks rose Thursday, lifting benchmark indexes to record highs, after jobless claims fell and earnings topped expectations.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index closed up 8.46 points, or 0.5 percent, at 1,689.37, its 21st record close this year. The Dow Jones industrial average closed up 78.02 points, or 0.5 percent, to 15,548.54, marking another record close this year.

The Nasdaq composite gained 1.28 points to 3,611.28.
