Lewiston hospitals rank tops in survey

Consumer Reports grades hospitals' safety measures for surgeries.

From staff reports

Two hospitals in Lewiston were ranked highest in Maine for their safety measures for surgeries in a survey released Thursday by Consumer Reports.

St. Mary's Regional Medical Center and Central Maine Medical Center rated highest on a scale of 100 in the survey.

St. Mary's rated 67, scoring higher than other Maine hospitals in categories such as bloodstream infections, rate of readmissions and surgery-adverse events. Central Maine Medical Center rated 61.

Among the six hospitals in Maine that were given safety scores in the survey were MaineGeneral Medical Center in Waterville, which received a 58; St. Joseph Hospital in Bangor, which received a 55; Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, which received a 52; and Maine Medical Center in Portland, which received a 47.

While other hospitals in Maine were rated on some individual measures, no others were given general safety scores.

The Consumer Reports website indicated that some hospitals did not receive overall scores because some data was not available or reliable.

The survey rated hospitals nationwide, using data from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, on measures including hospital practices, patients' experience and outcomes, using data on rates of infections, readmissions, scanning and complications after surgery.

A survey released in July by U.S. News & World report ranked Maine Medical Center as the best hospital in Maine in specialty care categories. In the Consumer Reports survey, Maine Med received mixed results.

In 2013, the Leapfrog Group, a health care trade industry group, gave Eastern Maine Medical Center, Central Maine Medical Center and Maine Med "A" ratings.
