NEW FACES

• Justin Schair was named vice president for development at Thermal Energy Storage of Maine in Saco. Schair was previously a managing partner of MaineAsia LLC, an investment and consulting company with a portfolio of international and domestic investments. Before joining MaineAsia, he was the finance director for the 2010 gubernatorial campaign of Eliot Cutler, an Independent.

• Christina De Marco Deetjen joined Legacy Properties Sotheby’s International Realty as a real estate broker. De Marco Deetjen specializes in properties on the Blue Hill peninsula and Mount Desert Island. She is a member of the Mid Coast Board of Realtors and the Maine Association of Realtors.

• R. Frank North joined Haley’s Metal Shop in Biddeford as manager of its service division, Total Comfort Services. He has operated his own HVAC company in Naples since 2005.

• Jerry DeWitt of New Gloucester recently began a year of service as an AmeriCorps VISTA member with Tri-County Mental Health Services. DeWitt is an advocate for veterans issues in Maine. A Vietnam-era veteran, he also served in Iraq in 2008 with the American Red Cross. He is a nurse, an emergency medical technician, a licensed social worker and a substance abuse counselor.

• Kerri L. Prescott joined Priority Group LLC as its marketing and communications director. Prescott, R-Topsham, is in her third term in the Maine Legislature and serves as House chair of the Labor, Commerce, Research and Economic Development Committee.

• H. Bruce Rinker, Ph.D., joined Biodiversity Research Institute as director of scientific advancement and development. Rinker has traveled the world as an ecologist, educator and explorer. His scientific expeditions have taken him to Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East and Australia.

• Melanie Mauro, Maria Champagne and Maria Johnson joined Creative Work Systems. Mauro, of Portland, was hired as a service coordinator. Champagne, of Saco, and Johnson, of South Portland, were hired as life skills coaches.

• Leischen Stelter joined Diversified Business Communications as a content specialist. Stelter was previously with United Publications in Yarmouth.

• Vern Baillargeon joined Professional Disability Associates as its senior vice president of strategic performance solutions. Baillargeon has 24 years of disability operational experience. He had worked for Unum for the past 18 years, most recently as vice president of disability claims.

PROMOTIONS

• Bill Shanahan was named president of the Northern New England Housing Investment Fund. He replaces John Anton, who left at the end of August. Shanahan was previously vice president of acquisitions for the private nonprofit corporation.

• Laura Foye was promoted to regional vice president in commercial lending at TD Bank. Foye, of Cape Elizabeth, has more than 25 years of experience in banking and lending. She joined TD Bank in 2000, and most recently served as a team leader and senior loan officer.

• Chris Perry was promoted to the position of commercial lender at Androscoggin Bank. Perry joined the bank in October 2010 as the market sales manager for Portland and Gray. Perry, of Portland, has more than five years of business banking experience.

• Scott Libby was named a residential design/build salesperson for HVAC and custom fabrication sales at Haley’s Metal Shop in Biddeford. He was previously their service department manager. He has more than 25 years of experience in design and operation of complete HVAC systems and metal work.

• Garrett Martin was named executive director for the Maine Center for Economic Policy. He joined the staff in February 2009 and was previously an associate director of the organization. He also served on its board of directors.

BOARD APPOINTMENTS

• Alan D. Mulherin was named president of National Treasury Employees Union Chapter 141, representing Customs and Border Protection officers and employees in Maine, southern New Hampshire and Halifax, Nova Scotia.

• Juliana L’Heureux, executive director of The Cromwell Center for Disabilities Awareness in Portland, was appointed to a state task force on Franco-Americans by House Speaker Robert Nutting, R-Oakland. L’Heureux is a freelance writer for The Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram. She has written about Franco-Americans in Maine and New England for the past 21 years.

• Althea Bennett McGirr and Ann Thayer joined the board of directors for the Friends of Casco Bay. McGirr, of Falmouth, is the director of customer service and consumer affairs for Oakhurst Dairy. Thayer, of Yarmouth, has had a long career in the environmental field, including environmental consulting and working in environmental management for heavy industry and manufacturing.

AWARDS and RECOGNITION

• Ride-Away of Maine was recently recognized with the 2010 Ralph Braun Signature Award for Customer Satisfaction from The Braun Corp., a manufacturer of wheelchair-accessible vehicles and wheelchair lift systems. Award recipients were selected based on customer survey results. Ride-Away has maintained a 99 percent score this year.

• The Maine Manufacturing Extension Partnership has awarded Falcon Performance Footwear in Lewiston with its distinguished manufacturing excellence award. The award is presented every year to a Maine company that has demonstrated leadership, vision and manufacturing excellence.

New England Travel magazine recognized Maine Eastern Railroad as the winner of “Best of New England Travel 2011 — Attraction — Way to Beat Summer Traffic.” New England Travel’s “The Best of New England Travel” is selected by the editors of Boston Magazine and is published annually.

• Pratt & Whitney’s North Berwick facility was recognized with an Above & Beyond Award from the Employer Support of the National Guard and Reserve. The award recognizes employers who have gone above and beyond the legal requirements for granting leave and providing support for military duty by their employees.

• Jim Lyon, president and founder of ActionCoach of Northern New England, recently attained gold level status from the ActionCOACH coaching firm, recognizing him as a top-tier business coach. Lyon has worked with more than 50 Maine businesses. He advises clients on overall business strategy, employee development and sales training.

• GWI in Biddeford and Tilson Technology Management in Portland were recently recognized as two of the fastest-growing private companies in America by Inc. magazine. GWI was recognized for achieving 23 percent growth over a three-year period. It has made the list four times in the past nine years.

Tilson Technology Management made the magazine’s list after achieving 260 percent growth over three years. Over the past 18 months, Tilson has helped public- and private-sector organizations execute large infrastructure projects, including Maine Fiber Co. Inc.’s Three Ring Binder Project, the Maine State Library’s Information Commons Project and Central Maine Power’s Advanced Meter Infrastructure Project.

• Estera LeConte, of BerryDunn, CPAs and Management Consultants, received the Certified Construction Industry Financial Professional designation.

• The Loyal Biscuit Co. in Belfast has expanded its business to include pet grooming. Carol Visser, a nationally certified master groomer, has managed, taught and created a curriculum at a major grooming school. She has also offered grooming seminars. She received her Certified Pet Dog Trainer status in 1995.

• Two Maine lodging businesses were recognized by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection for their efforts to reduce their impact on the environment. The Nestlewood Inn Bed & Breakfast in Carrabassett Valley and the Sheepscot Harbour Village & Resort in Edgecomb were both certified as environmental leaders by the DEP.

RETIREMENT

• Ronald E. Pendleton, a longtime trustee of Bath Savings Institution, is retiring. Pendleton, of South Bristol, became a corporator of the bank in 1977 and has served as a trustee for the past 23 years. He also recently retired after 55 years as a volunteer firefighter and 20 years as Bristol fire chief.
