NEW FACES

• Melanie Turner was hired to manage the new office for Cumberland Title Services LLC in Augusta.

Turner has 15 years’ experience with real estate transactions. This location joins offices in Portland and Brunswick. Cumberland Title is locally owned by Matthew and Randee McDonald of Windham and has been operating in Maine for over 25 years.

• Paul Bierman-Lytle joined Introspective Systems as chief executive officer. He has an extensive background in sustainable design and development, including work as the chief architect and planner on more than 150 sustainable development projects around the world.

• Adam Zimmerman recently opened law offices in Portland and Boston. Zimmerman’s practice handles employment and labor law matters on behalf of employees and small businesses. He previously worked in the litigation practice group at Norman, Hanson & DeTroy in Portland. Zimmerman’s Portland office is located at 477 Congress St., 5th floor.

• Brad Cates was hired as director of finance at Berwick Academy. He served as chief financial officer of Episcopal Academy in Pennsylvania. He has held the title of CFO or business manager for over 30 years.

• Emil Miskovsky, M.D., a gastroenterologist, joined Central Maine Medical Center Medical. Dr. Miskovsky was previously president and owner of Evergreen Gastroenterology in Bennington, Vt. He has extensive experience as a researcher and medical educator and was awarded several teaching awards.

• Diversified Business Communications hired the following people:

Christopher Paquette was hired as a support analyst. He was previously with Transit ID in Portland.

Leslie Taylor was named an online editor. Taylor was previously employed with Science Friday in New York.

Patrick Libby was hired as an application developer. Libby was previously employed with Verafore in Portland.

PROMOTIONS

• Marie Cutting, Michael Harvie and Michael Turner were promoted at Disability RMS.

Cutting was promoted to assistant vice president of claims. She began her career at Disability RMS in 2000 as a nurse medical consultant before moving into claims management in 2002.

Harvie was promoted to assistant vice president of client management. He joined the firm in 2005.

Turner was promoted to assistant vice president of client management. He began at the firm in 2001 as a member of the underwriting and association team, and later joined the client management team in 2002.

CERTIFICATIONS

• Sean O’Hare, a CPA in South Portland, recently earned the designation of a certified tax resolution specialist.

He works for O’Hare Associates, CPAs, 7 Ocean St. in South Portland.

AWARDS/RECOGNITIONS

• The Nonantum Resort in Kennebunkport was recognized with the coveted Certificate of Excellence Award from Trip Advisor, the largest travel website in the world.

To qualify for the award, businesses must maintain a rating of four or higher, out of a possible five, as reviewed by travelers on TripAdvisor.

• Meg Baxter, president and chief executive officer of the Mitchell Institute, was honored with the 2013 Muskie Access to Justice Award. The Muskie award “honors commitment to the public good, advanced through hard thinking, deep feeling, a voice of eloquent civility and a passion for justice.”

 

• Donald Lauzier, a 13-year employee of Saco & Biddeford Savings Institution, received the 2012 Kany Community Service Award. He was nominated by numerous employees for his 40 years of service to the community.

He was given a plaque and a donation to a charity of his choice. Lauzier chose Joyful Harvest, a Youth Organization in Biddeford to receive the Bank’s $500 donation.

• Chelsea Callanan, an attorney with Opticliff Law in Portland, was named to the 2013 New England Rising Stars Super Lawyer List.

Callanan was recognized for being under 40 years old and for practicing less then 10 years. Her focus is intellectual property.

BOARD APPOINTMENTS

• The World Affairs Council of Maine elected three new members to its board of directors.

Kimberly McLaughlin is the executive director of a consumer advocacy organization; Julie Nye is director of specialty underwriting at Unum; and Lucy Sommo is the international trade specialist at the Maine International Trade Center.

Board members elected to renewed terms are Julie Fisher, Lynne Houle, Maureen Hurley, Gino Nalli, Charles Norchi and Adam Rubin.

The board of directors elected the following officers for the upcoming year: Clifford Gilpin as president; Tim Honey as first vice president; Maureen Hurley as second vice president; Gino Nalli as treasurer; Gordon Erikson Jr. as assistant treasurer; Lynne Houle as secretary, and Gail Witherill as assistant secretary.

• Jed Harris was elected to the board of directors of the Maine Real Estate & Development Association.

Harris, of Falmouth, opened his own real estate investment firm, North Atlantic Properties in 2004.

 

• Ralph Lancaster, a member of the litigation group at Pierce Atwood, was named chair of the board of trustees of the Supreme Court Historical Society.

Lancaster tries both civil and criminal cases locally, nationally and internationally. He has been appointed a special master by the Justices of the Supreme Court of the United States on three different occasions.

• Toby Dilworth was elected president of the Maine Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.

Dilworth, a lawyer at Drummond Woodsum, has more than 20 years of trial experience, concentrating in commercial litigation, white collar defense and internal investigations.

• Ashanti Johnson, executive director of the Institute for Broadening Participation in Damariscotta, was appointed to a 24-member panel creating a strategic vision for the National Academy of Sciences’ Gulf of Mexico program.

• Dr. David Johnson, of Southern Maine Medical Center; Scott Anderson, of Verrill Dana; and Mark Mueller, an architect, were named to the board of trustees for the Laudholm Trust, nonprofit partner within the Wells Reserve at Laudholm.

• The Choral Art Society elected the following new members to its board of directors: Peter M. Bagg of Portland, a retired marketing and business development for the Intel Corp.; attorney Michael Boyd of Portland; Melissa Duffy, a managing partner with Duffy/Anderson Investment Management LLC; and Sam Wilson of Portland, a retired computer systems industry account executive.
