Baxter Brewing Co. recently announced plans to develop a craft brewery in Lewiston’s historic Bates Mill complex.

This is the first craft brewery in northern New England to combine hand-crafted beer with the convenient, environmentally friendly technology of aluminum cans. The company plans to begin shipping beer in September.

“The state of Maine is aching for full-flavored, American-style ales and the environmentally friendly, beer-friendly and highly portable can,” Baxter’s founder and president, Luke Livingston, said.

The Baxter brewery will feature a 30-barrel brewhouse and a state-of-the-art canning line that can fill 30 cans a minute. Livingston plans to have the facility open daily for brewery tours, tastings and special events, as well as a fully stocked retail shop featuring both beer and Baxter Brewing Co. items.

“We want our brewery itself to be a fun and vibrant place that people not only want to visit, but want to keep coming back to,” Livingston said. “The brewery itself will truly be a destination, like no other production brewery in the state.”

Livingston, of Portland, is an Edward Little High School graduate and has a bachelors degree in communications and film from Clark University in Massachusetts. He is the author of BlogAboutBeer.com and a co-founder of the Maine Beer Writers Guild.

As a home brewer for the past five years, Livingston saw a void for canned craft brew in the Maine beer industry and decided to change that.

“Cans are just so perfect for the outdoor culture,” he said, after having seen craft beers canned by breweries in Colorado and California.

Michael LaCharite will join Baxter Brewing as a world-class brewmaster and Beer Judge Certification Program certified judge.

He brings with him more than 25 years of home brewing experience, which also includes 15 years professional experience as founding partner and brewer for Casco Bay Brewing Co. of Portland.

Baxter Brewing Co. hopes to have a groundbreaking within the next few weeks. For more information, visit www.baxterbrewing.com.
