TITLE: Copy editor and web producer

DEPARTMENT: Newsroom

REPORTS TO: Night News Editor

POSITION TYPE: Full Time

POSITION OBJECTIVES/SUMMARY:

Design and paginate pages in the papers at the direction of the nightly supervisor, aiming to create pages that are clean, well designed and compelling. Also posts and curates online content for CentralMaine.com, making sure the latest stories are posted quickly and that the homepage and sections of the site are updated with fresh, compelling content.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Paginates pages that are needed, at the direction of the night supervisor.
  2. Completes pages in a timely and efficient manner while seeking feedback and direction from the night supervisor.
  3. Adjusts page designs and story placements as breaking news dictates.
  4. Proofs pages for accuracy and design, while reviewing headlines and stories.
  5. Posts news stories with appropriate taxonomies and tags, adding relevant elements such as photos and maps.
  6. Curates content throughout the website so that important stories are presented in a compelling manner on the homepage and section fronts.
  7. Manages our social media accounts, including on Facebook and Twitter, and monitoring other media for stories.
  8. Designs special sections or features for the website that aggregate content.
  9. Reviews story headlines to make sure they are compelling and accurate, and online assets, related stories and hyperlinks are added.
  10. Uses available technology to support efforts as needed.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:

A college degree or significant professional experience required; previous experience at a daily news organization desired. Valid driver’s license, a reliable vehicle and proof of insurance required.
