A prominent political consultant has been questioned as Maine campaign regulators investigate a website critical of independent candidate for governor Eliot Cutler.

Maine Public Radio reported that Dennis Bailey, president of Portland-based Savvy Inc. and consultant for independent candidate Shawn Moody, is being questioned in connection with the website. Bailey denies any knowledge of the site’s creator.

Cutler asked the ethics commission to investigate the site to see if it violates state campaign finance laws.

Republican activist Dan Billings, the attorney representing authors of the website, says his unnamed clients are entitled to First Amendment protections and aren’t covered by campaign finance laws.
