    Cum Laude seniors

    Logan Bement is the son of Heidi and John Bement of Kennebunk, Maine. Logan has attended Berwick Academy since grade 2 and was inducted into the Cum Laude Society his senior Year. He has been named to the honor or high honor roll each marking period of his high school career, in which he has endured a rigorous curriculum, complete with numerous Advanced Placement, independent study, and honors courses. He has received several departmental recognition awards for Latin and math; he is also a member of the National Latin Honor Society. He annually earned recognition for his achievement on the National Latin Exam. He was an active member of his FBLA chapter, and placed 3rd in the state of Maine on the sports management test and 2nd on the business ethics test.

    Logan has been a member of the Varsity Basketball and Baseball teams over his athletic career at Berwick. He was a part of the NEPSAC Class D Championship team his sophomore year. Alongside League MVP Harry Rafferty, he was co-captain of the team his senior year, in which he averaged 12 points per game, 4 assists per game, and 4 rebounds per game, earning him an All-Eastern Independent League Honor. He cites his friendships with his teammates on that team as one of his most cherished possessions.

    For his senior project, Logan will be interning with the Sanford Mainers, a summer baseball team that brings in some of the top collegiate talent from across the country. Logan will be assisting in the business office as well as handling some of the on-field PA duties. He was accepted to Syracuse University, Emmanuel College, George Mason University, Seton Hall University and the University of Connecticut. Logan will attend UCONN and major in Business. He would like to thank the Academy for the last 11 years, the teachers and coaches for their faith in him, and his friends and family for allowing him to flourish in such an amazing environment.

    Kathryn Davis, daughter of Drs. Michael and Christine Davis of Rochester, New Hampshire, has attended Berwick Academy since the first grade. During her time at BA she has maintained honors or high honors each marking period, and was inducted into the Cum Laude Society her junior year. Katy has also been a devoted dancer all twelve years, being a part of Berwick’s companies in middle and upper school, as well as becoming Head Captain of the dance company her senior year. She spent her first trimester period of her junior year studying abroad in Moguer, Spain, and became a passionate traveller and fluent speaker of the Spanish language. She has also taken part in soccer, at junior varsity and varsity levels, and played for a team in Spain her junior year during her study abroad.

    Katy has also been awarded Departmental Recognition Awards for Spanish, math, and history, as well as the Smith College Book award her junior year. She was inducted into the National Spanish Honor Society her sophomore year, and has placed in the top three in the state of Maine on the National Spanish Exam each year since 8th grade. She has also been proud to be a part of the school’s Gay-Straight Alliance all four years of high school as well, and even more honored upon becoming the group’s co-leader her senior year.

    Katy has been fortunate and grateful for the opportunities given to her at the Academy, and would like to thank all of those who have been a source of inspiration and motivation throughout the years. She will be attending Northeastern University in the fall.

    Mary DePascale, daughter of Lisa and Charles DePascale, of Eliot, Maine, has attended Berwick Academy since the seventh grade. She has earned high honors or honors in each term at Berwick and was inducted into the Cum Laude Society in her junior year. She was inducted into the Spanish Honor Society in her freshman year and the Tri-M Music Honor Society in her senior year. She earned several medals on the National Spanish Exam, placing second in the state of Maine in her junior year.

    Mary has participated in dance and basketball each of her years at Berwick. She has been a member of dance Company Blue since sophomore year along with performing in hip hop, Company Corps, and pointe classes at Berwick and jazz, tap, and ballet classes at Joyce Dance Studios in Dover, New Hampshire. She has been a member of the JV Basketball team since freshman year, earning the Coach’s Award in her junior year and serving as co-captain junior and senior year.

    Mary was selected for the Maine District 1 Honors Music Festival choruses each year at Berwick. Additionally, she has been a member of the Berwick chorus, band, a cappella, and chamber music groups as well as a regular performer at Berwick coffeehouses. In her junior and senior year, she studied organ with David Wold as part of the Young Organist Collaborative.

    In addition to sports and music, Mary has been active in numerous clubs and activities at Berwick throughout her high school years including serving as senior editor of the yearbook, contributing regularly to The Vernacular, serving as a tutor through the Peer Tutor Program at Berwick as well as at the Marshwood Great Works School through the Outreach Program, and volunteering with the Lassiter Buddy Program.

    Mary plans to attend Wesleyan University next fall to study languages and psychology.

    Elizabeth DuChene, daughter of Todd and Jennifer DuChene of Hampton, NH, was inducted into the Cum Laude Society during her senior year. She has attended Berwick Academy for the past six years, during the course of which she has earned a place on the high honor or honor roll for every grading period. She received a Departmental Recognition Award in chemistry during the winter of her sophomore year. Elizabeth was inducted into the National Latin Honor Society in the spring of her sophomore year, and has achieved Gold or Silver medals on each level of the National Latin Exam for the past six years. During her senior year, Elizabeth was also inducted into the National Spanish Honor Society. Elizabeth achieved second place in the state of Maine for the Level One National Spanish Exam, and first place in the state of Maine for the Level Two National Spanish Exam.

    At Berwick Academy, Elizabeth has been a member of the Varsity Cross Country team for three of the past four years. She has also participated in dance at Berwick Academy for all four years of high school; most recently as a member of the Company Blue and Company Corps dance groups. She has participated in the Lassiter Buddy pen-pal program at Berwick, as well as the Big and Little Buddy program. Last summer, Elizabeth traveled to Africa with the Global Leadership Adventures organization to participate in service projects and to teach English to children at a local school in Tanzania.

    Elizabeth thanks her teachers, friends, and advisor, Mr. Downey, for all of their help and support throughout her years at Berwick Academy. Elizabeth will be attending the University of Virginia next fall.

    Nicole Kleinmann, the daughter of Ralph and Elisabeth Kleinmann of Durham, New Hampshire, was inducted into the Cum Laude Society as a senior. She has attended Berwick Academy since fifth grade and has been on the honor or high honor roll since ninth grade. During her high school career, she received the Art and History Departmental Recognition Awards and the Yale Book Award. Other accomplishments include being inducted into the National Spanish Honor Society, the Tri-M Music Honor Society, and the National Art Honor Society.

    Nicole has played twelve seasons of sports at Berwick and during her senior year served as team captain for Varsity Cross Country, Basketball, and Tennis. She received EIL Honorable Mention her sophomore, junior, and senior year for Varsity Basketball and EIL All-League Award her junior year for Varsity Tennis. Nicole played trumpet in the band and jazz band her freshman and sophomore year and has played the piano since Kindergarten. She has performed in Winterfest, an auditioned music concert at her school, her freshman, junior, and senior year. She is currently a member of SWAT (Student Wellness Advisory Team), a Peer Tutor, and was involved in Student Government.

    For her senior project, Nicole will be painting a mural locally in Maine. She will be attending Boston College in the fall, studying to be a high school math teacher. Nicole wants to thank her family, teachers, and friends for all their support.

    Elena G. Penati, daughter of Elizabeth Dudley of Newmarket, New Hampshire and Francesco Penati of San Francisco, California, was inducted into Cum Laude in her senior year at Berwick Academy. In the Upper School, she has earned two departmental recognition awards, one in art and another in history. She was also inducted into the National Latin Honors Society and the National Arts Society during her junior year. With taking the National Latin Exams each year, she has earned a Magna Cum Laude twice and a Maxima Cum Laude. In addition, she was awarded two Scholastic Art Awards Honorable Mentions for her artwork. During each marking period since she entered Berwick Academy in sixth grade, she has made the honor or high honor roll. Throughout the Upper School, she has taken seven honors courses and four AP courses.

    For three years, Elena enjoyed playing varsity tennis and for four years, running varsity cross-country. She was co-captain of the Cross Country Team in her senior year and was awarded the coach’s award that season. Elena led the Model United Nations club on campus during her senior year, attending both the Dartmouth conference and the Harvard conference with the club. Artworks, the after-school art program in the winter with the Lower School was also co-founded by Elena and her friend Devon Wood during their junior year. This spring for her senior project, she will paint an outdoor mural with two of her friends in Wells, Maine near the ocean.

    Elena will be attending Johns Hopkins University in the fall. She plans on majoring in International Relations and is looking forward to the next four years ahead of her. Elena is grateful for her wonderful teachers, friends and family and wishes them all the best.

    Hayley Reddington is the daughter of Michael and Catherine Reddington of Rye, New Hampshire. After attending the Cornerstone Montessori School, she joined the Berwick Academy community as a freshman in high school. Hayley has maintained grades worthy of the honors and high honors roll during every marking period at Berwick, as well as receiving the Departmental Recognition Award for Science and being inducted into the National Latin Honors Society in her junior year. She has taken a total of six honors and three AP courses.

    During her time on the Hilltop, Hayley has participated in a variety of athletics including JV soccer, lacrosse, tennis, and most notably the four years she was a part of the JV Hockey Team, attaining the position of Captain as a senior. Hayley has also participated in the Lassiter pen-pal program, been a member of the recycling committee, a member of the Math Team, and became a school tour guide her senior year. In past summers, Hayley has taken a pre-calculus course at UNH in order to advance in her Berwick math career, worked as the Kennel Assistant at the Stratham-Newfield’s veterinary hospital, participated in a program for students interested in health professions at Dartmouth College, and traveled to England, Ireland, and Wales as a Student Ambassador with People to People.

    Hayley was accepted to Hamilton, RPI, Marist, Goucher and Lake Forest. Next year she will be attending Marist College as a member of their Honors Program on a Presidential Scholarship. She intends to study within their School of Science, but is currently undecided regarding a major. Hayley wants to thank her family, friends, teachers, coaches and advisor, Mr. Lassey, for making her time at Berwick fulfilling and worthwhile.

    Abby Jean Scanlon, daughter of Thomas and JoDee Scanlon, of Ogunquit, Maine, was inducted into the Cum Laude Society as a senior. She has attended Berwick Academy since her sophomore year. Abby received a recognition award in English her sophomore year and in art in her senior year. During March break of her sophomore year, Abby traveled with her mentors Mrs. Wildnauer and Ms. Russell to Tuscany, Italy to study art, beautiful landscapes, and fabulous food, as well as traveling to Washington DC to participate in the National Young Leadership Conference. At the end of her sophomore year Abby traveled with the Lassiter Buddy program to Louisville, Kentucky to provide support to the week-long summer program, BA was hosting. Abby was selected in her junior year to go for three days to Haystack Mountain School of Crafts for a class on metalsmithing, and will return this summer to learn glass blowing for two weeks. Senior year, Abby began taking piano lessons and was school champion of the Poetry Out Loud contest. Throughout junior and senior year, Abby has taken a total of 5 Aps. She is a member of both the Spanish Honor Society and the Art Honor Society, and a co-leader of the Big and Little Buddies program.

    Outside of the classroom, Abby completed three seasons in the Wells-Ogunquit Warrior Marching Band, as Captain of the Color Guard. She performed in The King and I, Beauty and the Beast, A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream, and produced sets for Damn Yankees. Abby also continues as Manager at the Rose Cove Restaurant in Ogunquit, ME as she has for the past four years.

    For her senior project, Abby will be creating an art project per request of a terminally ill cancer patient, being treated in South Berwick, as well at interning at an acupuncturist. Abby will be attending Penn State University to study architectural engineering, and hopes to join their color guard and continue her passions in studio art and poetry. Abby would like to thank her amazing mentors on the Hilltop, Mrs. Wildnauer and Ms. Johnson.

    Caroline Seekins, daughter of Anne Barondes Seekins and Arthur Seekins of Portsmouth, NH, entered Berwick Academy in the ninth grade. She was inducted into the Cum Laude Society and the Spanish Honor Society in her junior year. She has been on the high honor roll since ninth grade. Caroline received a Departmental Recognition Award in Physics, the Cogswell Book Prize for highest class average sophomore year, and the Dartmouth Book Award. A member of the Math Team since sophomore year, she has competed at the Maine State Math Meet for the past three years. Her Berwick community service participation includes the Lassiter Buddies Program, Toys for Tots, and Relay for Life.

    Caroline has been an active participant in Berwick athletics. Caroline was a member of the Varsity Soccer Team for three years, receiving the Coaches’ Award her senior year. She was also a member of the Varsity Swim Team, holding the position of Captain her junior and senior years. The highlight of her high school swimming career occurred this year when she and her 200 Medley Relay and 400 Freestyle Relay teammates (Kelsey Hayden, Jenna Hayden, and Izzy Reis) set 2 new league records at the Eastern Independent League championship meet in February. Caroline also set a new individual league record in the 100 Breaststroke at the same meet.

    Caroline has been accepted at Bucknell University, Colby College, Connecticut College, Davidson College, Tufts University, University of Richmond, and Wellesley College. Next year Caroline will attend Hamilton College where she will study chemistry and mathematics, and swim competitively. She would like thank her advisor, Amory Mansfield, for her support over the last four years, and the math and science departments at Berwick Academy for challenging and inspiring her.

    Benjamin Siegel, the son of Andrew and Mary Anne Siegel of York, Maine, was inducted into the Cum Laude Society his junior year. He has attended Berwick Academy since fifth grade, and in the Upper School he made the honor roll freshman year and high honors in every marking period since then. Benjamin received both Math and Language Departmental Recognition Awards during his sophomore year as well as the Harvard Book Prize and Chemistry Departmental Award at the end of his junior year. He was inducted into the National Spanish Honor Society during his sophomore year and has placed in the top fifteen in the state on the National Spanish Exam the past three years. Benjamin placed in the top ten in the state of Maine on the Chemistry Olympiad in his junior year and qualified to be one of eight students to take the national test in the state. He has also been an active member on the Math Team. He went to the Maine State Math Meet each of the past four years, was the school winner of the AMC 10 his freshman year, and went to the New England Math Meet during his sophomore year.

    Benjamin has been a member of the Varsity Golf, Varsity Basketball, JV Baseball, and Varsity Tennis Teams over the past four years. He won an All-League Honorable Mention award for the Eastern Independent League in golf his senior year, and won the Coach’s Awards his freshman year on JV Baseball as well as his sophomore year on Varsity Tennis. He was the captain of the tennis team during his senior season.

    Benjamin served as a student government representative for three years and was an Admissions Tour Guide and Peer Tutor in math and science during his junior and senior years. He also served on the school’s Honor Committee his senior year and was a member of the Student Wellness Advisory Team.

    For his Senior Project, Benjamin plans on exploring the field of engineering by shadowing several engineers in the seacoast area. He will attend Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania next fall where he will major in Chemical Engineering. Benjamin thanks all of his family, friends, teachers, and coaches who have played an important role in making his eight years at Berwick so memorable.

    Erin Elizabeth Trainor, daughter of Brian and Elizabeth Trainor of York, Maine, was inducted into the Berwick chapter of the Cum Laude Society during her junior year. Since entering Berwick Academy as a freshman, Erin has maintained an outstanding academic record, achieving high honors every marking period and earning the Cogswell Award for highest academic achievement in her freshman and junior years. Erin has received Departmental Recognition Awards in both science and French, placed in the National Language Contest as a freshman, sophomore, and junior, been inducted into the National French Honor Society, and received the Brown University Book Award for excellence in writing.

    In addition to her academics, Erin has been a part of the Varsity Cross Country, JV Soccer, JV Lacrosse, and JV Tennis teams while at Berwick, captaining the JV Soccer team during her sophomore year and the JV Lacrosse team during both her sophomore and junior years. As co-chair of the 2011 Prom Committee, leader of the Recycling Committee and Lassiter Buddy Program, and a member of the Berwick Green Alliance, Big and Little Buddies Program, Yearbook staff, Admissions Tour-Guide Program, Gay-Straight Alliance, and Stage Crew, Erin has been actively involved in life on the Hilltop. Outside of school, she has donated her time to the York Historical Society as a Junior Docent for the past six years.

    This summer will be Erin’s fourth season working at The Goldenrod in York, Maine. For her senior project, she will explore her interest in pediatric medicine by shadowing a local physician. Erin has been accepted as a Presidential Scholar to Colby College in Waterville, Maine. She plans to matriculate there and is currently undecided about her course of study.

    Nate Winters, son of Tim and Marie Winters of Dover, NH, has attended Berwick Academy since ninth grade and was inducted into the Cum Laude Society as a senior. He earned high honors or honors each term, maintaining high honors for the last two years. Nate received a Departmental Recognition Award in math his sophomore year and was the high scorer for Berwick Academy on the American Math Competition his sophomore (AMC 10) and senior (AMC 12) years. He was inducted into the Spanish National Honor Society his junior year. Following AP classes in chemistry, calculus AB and computer science during his junior year, Nate earned the status of College Board AP Scholar. As a senior, he completed AP classes in physics, calculus BC and English.

    Nate was a starter for the Varsity Tennis Team all four years, a member of the Golf Team his senior year and JV Soccer his freshman year. He performed in four musicals and two dramatic productions, including the major roles of Oliver in Oliver!, Cogsworth in Beauty and the Beast, and Otto Frank in The Diary of Anne Frank. A valuable member of the Math Team all four years, he qualified to attend the state meet the last three years and the regional meet as a sophomore. His senior year, Nate was a Peer Tutor for chemistry and math and the Co-Chair of the Recycling Committee. Nate has participated in the Lassiter Buddy program for three years, being paired with a younger student from a rural school in Kentucky as a pen pal. Organized by the Outreach Committee, Nate also participated in Relay for Life the last two years. Throughout his high school years, Nate baked and delivered homemade goods to My Friend’s Place, a homeless shelter in Dover.

    For his senior project, Nate and a classmate built and ran experiments on a small fuel cell car in an attempt to better understand developing technologies. Nate will attend Tufts University in the fall, joining the College of Engineering’s class of 2016. He would like to thank the incredible faculty and staff at Berwick Academy for providing the opportunity for four years of success and fulfillment on the Hilltop.

    Devon Wood, the daughter of Stephen and Nancy Wood of Kittery, Maine, has been a student at Berwick Academy since Kindergarten, and was inducted into the Cum Laude Society in her junior year. She has achieved high honors during every marking period of her academic career. Throughout high school she has received departmental awards in both math and science, won the Rensselaer Medal Award, and is a member of the National Spanish Honor Society. She also was a Presidential Scholar Nominee, won two silver and a gold medal on the National Spanish Exam, and was the first place qualifier in Maine for the National Chemistry Olympiad.

    Outside of academics, Devon is involved on the Hilltop in theater set design and stage crew, peer tutoring in math, science, and Spanish, campus tour guides, the Berwick Green Alliance, campus recycling, and Artworks, a program she co-founded which connects Upper and Lower School students in weekly art activities. She also has played four seasons of Varsity Tennis, winning an All League Award as a junior, and was co-captain in her senior year.

    Off the Hilltop Devon is an active horseback rider, competing along the entire East Coast, and qualifying for national finals such as the ASPCA Maclay and the USEF Pessoa Medal. Her most notable successes are 3rd place finish at New England Finals, 1st and 3rd in the New Hampshire Hunter Derby, and 7th and 11th in Maclay Regionals. In addition to riding horses Devon also owns her own gardening business, D.Daffodils, which she started as a sophomore.

    For her senior project, Devon will be working with fellow Cum Laude members Ellie Penati and Nicole Kleinmann at the Wells Reserve at Laudholm Farm to create murals of the various New England habitats. Next year Devon will be attending Georgetown University in Washington D.C. to study business.

    Devon would like to thank everyone at Berwick Academy for thirteen truly wonderful years. Their motivation and support has meant everything to her, and she will carry those memories long after she has left the Hilltop.
