Cum Laude

Danny Bottino is the son of Marlane and Robert Bottino of Kittery Point, Maine. Danny has attended Berwick Academy since the sixth grade, and was inducted into the Cum Laude Society his junior year. Danny has been on the honor or high honor role every marking period during his high school career and has been on the high honor role ever since the beginning of his sophomore year. During his academic career he has completed five honors courses and six AP courses. Other academic accomplishments include being inducted into the National Spanish Honor Society his sophomore year, receiving the History Departmental Recognition Award his sophomore year, the Bausch and Lomb award his junior year, and the Cogswell Award for having the highest GPA during his junior year.

Danny has been part of the Varsity Cross Country team since his sophomore year and the Varsity Tennis team since his junior year. He won the JV Tennis Coach’s Award his freshman year and the MVP Award his sophomore year before being promoted to Varsity. He has also acted in two Upper School dramatic plays, The Man who Came to Dinner and Arms and the Man, as well as being part of the Berwick Academy robotics team since his freshman year. Danny also has had great satisfaction in being part of the Upper School chess club since his freshman year.

For his senior project, Danny will be writing a research paper on the history of artificial lighting in the town of South Berwick in general and the Sarah Orne Jewett house specifically. Next fall, Danny plans to attend Tufts University, where he hopes to major in either Biology or International Relations and minor in Film Studies.

Elizabeth Hopkins, the daughter of Christopher and Madeleine Hopkins of Wells, Maine, was inducted into the Cum Laude Society in the winter of her senior year. She has attended Berwick Academy for the past ten years, during the course of which she has remained on the high honor or honor roll every semester. During her high school career, Elizabeth has received a total of four Recognition Awards in art, history, English, and French, and was awarded the Harvard Book Prize at the end of her junior year. She was inducted into the Tri-M Music Honor Society and the French Honor Society in her sophomore year, and was admitted into the National Art Honor Society as a junior last year.

Elizabeth has been an active participant in the arts both on campus and off campus throughout her high school years, playing at school events, local coffeehouses and Sobopalooza, an annual student-organized music festival in South Berwick, Maine. She has also performed in musicals during her four years of high school, with leading roles in the past three productions. Elizabeth has participated actively in the art community on campus and off campus, showing her work in several local art galleries and in competitions, including the Scholastic Arts Competition and the NHIA High School Drawing Competition. Elizabeth has partaken in local poetry readings as well, including the annual student Beat Night at the Press Room in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and Portsmouth’s Jazzmouth Festival. Elizabeth has also played on the JV Tennis team for the past four years.

This summer will be Elizabeth’s fourth season working at Bread and Roses Bakery in Ogunquit, Maine. For her senior project, she will be recording an original album with fellow student Trestan Matel and co-writing a one-act musical with classmate Freddy Diengott. This fall, Elizabeth will be joining the Class of 2015 at Skidmore College, where she will study English, Philosophy and Environmental Studies, as well as the Arts.

William Leach, son of Greg and Margy Leach of Kennebunk, was been inducted into the Cum Laude Society as a senior. Bill entered Berwick Academy in the ninth grade where he maintained high honors or honors throughout his four years. He received the Departmental Recognition for Mathematics Award and was inducted into the Spanish National Honor Society in his junior year.

A member of the Berwick Varsity Tennis team for four years, Bill was selected as the most valuable player his sophomore and junior years. He also received honorable mention to the Eastern Independent League Tennis team his sophomore year. Bill participated on the Junior Varsity Hockey team for four years. He received the MVP Award in his first three seasons and was captain in his last two years.

William has traveled as a student ambassador to Italy and Greece with the People to People organization. During the summer he has worked in a local restaurant. Bill was active in the student government as an elected senior representative. He has been accepted to the University of Richmond where he will pursue interests in civil and environmental engineering.

Katie MacFarlane, daughter of John and Leigh Ann MacFarlane of York, Maine, has attended Berwick Academy since the sixth grade. She has remained on the high honor or honor roll for each grading period during her academic career. Katie has received the Departmental Recognition Award for English, the Dartmouth College Book Award, and a Letter of Commendation in the National Merit Scholarship Test. Katie was inducted into the National Latin Honor Society in her sophomore year, and the Cum Laude Society in her junior year.

At school, Katie has been a member of the Varsity Lacrosse team for the past three years, and received the Coach’s Award while on the JV Lacrosse team during her freshman year. She was also a member of the Cross-Country team for the past two years, receiving the Coach’s Award in her junior year. Katie has also been involved musically, and was inducted into the Tri-M Music Honor Society during her sophomore year. She has taken both piano and guitar lessons on and off-campus for many years. She co-founded the Berwick Green Alliance with two other classmates during her junior year, and was yearbook editor during her senior year. Katie is volunteering at the Decorator Showhouse in York for her senior project.

Katie will be attending Middlebury College next year and is currently undecided about her course of study.

Jenna Maddock, the daughter of Jamie and Sue Maddock of South Berwick, Maine, was inducted into the Cum Laude Society her junior year. She has maintained a respectable academic record, achieving high honors in every marking period and having the highest class average for five of the seven years from fifth grade on. She has also received Departmental Recognition Awards in science and French, the Princeton Book Award of Maine, the Chemistry Medal, and is a member of the National French Honor Society. She has placed first in the state of Maine and in the top ten nationally for the past 5 years in the National French Exam and was a Presidential Scholar Nominee and National Merit Finalist. She was also the top scorer in the state of Maine for the Chemistry Olympiad as a junior.

In addition to her academics, Jenna has played seven seasons of Varsity athletics at Berwick, four in Cross-Country and three in Softball. In running, she has been named All-NEPSTA for all four years, team MVP and an EIL All-Star for the past two years, and was a co-captain her senior year. She was named an EIL All-Star as a junior in Softball as well. In addition to school athletics, Jenna is a Nordic skier and trains year round for the sport. Skiing for Gunstock Nordic Association, she has been named to the New Hampshire J2 for both years she was eligible and has been named to the New Hampshire Eastern High School team for all four years. This past year, she was the top-ranked female skier on the New Hampshire team and also qualified to compete in Junior Nationals in Minneapolis, where her best finish was nineteenth place.

Jenna also plays flute, playing in the Winterfest Audition Concert for three out of her four years in high school and performing in the pit orchestra for musicals. She has also played the piano at school concerts and Coffeehouses and enjoys being able to perform with other students. In addition, she has been part of the stage crew for the winter musical.

Next year, Jenna will attend Williams College, where she will pursue a liberal arts education and ski competitively on the team. She would like to thank her peers and the Berwick faculty for 13 years of school on the hilltop.

Sophie Merrow, daughter of Lucas and Robin Merrow of Rollinsford, New Hampshire, was inducted into the Cum Laude Society as a senior. Sophie entered Berwick Academy in the sixth grade and has maintained high honors or honors throughout her academic career. She completed four Advanced Placement courses in US history, English, French, and art, as well as several honors courses. She also received a Departmental Recognition Award in physics her freshman year. Her junior year, Sophie was selected by the faculty to receive the Blue and White Award. This award is given to the two juniors who have contributed the most to the BA community. Sophie was also inducted into the National French Honor Society as a sophomore, as well as the Art Honor Society as a senior.

Sophie is a three-season athlete, having been a member of the Varsity Lacrosse, Soccer, and Ski teams. She served as team captain for all three sports during her senior year. She received the Soccer Coach’s Award as a sophomore and the Soccer MVP Award as a senior.

Sophie has been a class representative on student government for three years and an Honor Committee member for two. She was a founding member of the Peer Tutor program, tutoring other students in French, English, and history. Sophie also served as co-editor of the Vernacular, the Berwick Academy literary magazine, since her sophomore year; she cites this as her most challenging and rewarding Berwick experience, and will miss the amazing faculty members. Outside of school, Sophie is an avid skier and works as a children’s ski instructor. For her senior project, she is photographing a portrait series of the Upper School faculty as a tribute to their talent as educators and their compassion as people.

Sophie has been accepted at Boston College, Boston University, Dickinson College, and University of Denver. This fall, she plans to attend the University of St. Andrews in Scotland where she will pursue a double major in Art History and International Relations. Sophie would like to thank her family, friends, teachers, and coaches for filling her time at Berwick with happiness.

Brian Rawn, son of Gloria Legere and James Rawn of York, Maine, was inducted into the Cum Laude Society this winter as a senior. During his junior year, Brian received both the English and Art Departmental Recognition Award and won the Timothy Kelliher Writing Competition. As a senior, Brian won two Scholastic Silver Key distinctions from the annual Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. Brian also served as a member of the National Spanish Honors Society and the National Art Honors Society.

During his three years at Berwick, Brian was able to involve himself in many of the academic and extracurricular opportunities that Berwick offers. In addition to participating in many of Berwick’s school clubs, Brian played on the Varsity Soccer team for two years and the Varsity Tennis team for three. During his senior year, Brian was a member of the Varsity Soccer team that boasted an undefeated season and an EIL championship. Brian also participated on the Berwick robotics team for three years.

Brian has been interested in architecture for much of his life, and completed a six week pre-college architecture course at Carnegie Mellon during the summer preceding his senior year to solidify his interest in the profession. Because of his desire to pursue a career that integrates many fields of study, Brian hopes to further his knowledge of architecture in college. Brian was accepted early decision to the University of Pennsylvania this winter, where he intends to major in Architecture and continue pursuing his interests in art, physics, and the humanities. For his senior project, Brian is shadowing a property developer in Boston and touring nearby architecture firms to gain a greater knowledge of architecture and a deeper understanding of the practical side of the profession.

Cristina Elaine Salvador of Stratham, New Hampshire is the daughter of Dr. Carlos P. Salvador and Patricia A. Gaskill. She joined the Berwick Academy community in her sophomore year and was inducted into the Berwick chapter of the Cum Laude Society during her senior year. Other academic achievements include being inducted to the National Honor Society of Secondary Schools and the National French Honor Society. Cristina's academic recognition awards include Steve Fordham nominee for the American School Foundation of Monterrey (ASFM); College Board AP Scholar Award; President's Education Award for Outstanding Academic Excellence; ECOSOC Best Delegate Award for an International Monterrey Model United Nations simulation; English Departmental Awards; Senior Class Language Department Award; Brown University Book Award; Level 3 French National Language Contest, second place in the state of Maine; Level 4 French National Language Contest, first place in the state of Maine and the Level 5 French National Language Contest, sixth place in the state of Maine. She plans to attend Pomona College in Claremont, California this fall.

As a student leader of Berwick Academy's Student Wellness Advisory Team (SWAT), Cristina often served as an admissions tour guide and was a student leader for new student orientation programs including the freshman trip and the new student orientation. She represented the student body in addressing problems among her peers with the school counselor and the dean of students and was a facilitator for the seventh grade sexuality night and the ninth grade student/parent discussions on drug and alcohol concerns. In her junior year, Cristina recruited a group of students to start Berwick Academy's Model United Nations club. She led the group in learning the rules of a UN simulation and the role students would play in representing the interests of specific countries to the international organization. This year, a group of 11 members of the club participated in the 58th annual Harvard Model UN conference in Boston where the students debated and collaborated on proposing solutions to world problems. She has also been a peer tutor her junior and senior years.

Cristina's extracurricular activities include performances in Berwick Academy's drama and musical theatre productions “Oliver”, “The King and I”, “Beauty and the Beast”, “The Perfect Alibi” and “The Diary of Anne Frank”. She was a member of the school Varsity Cross-Country team in her sophomore and junior years and the Junior Varsity Tennis team in her junior year, having received the JV Tennis Coach’s Award. She is currently a member of the Varsity Tennis team. Cristina enjoys contributing to community service initiatives and participated in Berwick's Lassiter Buddy program and service initiative. Outside of school, Cristina is a member of UNIDOS, a summer camp program for disabled children in Monterrey, Mexico that promotes tolerance and acceptance of our differences to integrate disabled children into the community. Since her junior year, Cristina has been a member of the New Hampshire Youth Choir and for the past two years has participated in the UNH Summer Youth Music School (SYMS).

Jennifer Scharff, the daughter of Stuart and Jodi Scharff of North Hampton, NH, has attended Berwick Academy since kindergarten. Jenny is a member of the Cum Laude Society and the National Spanish Honor Society. She has maintained high honors or honors every semester and received a departmental recognition award in science in her senior year. She has also won three bronze medals on the National Spanish Exam, most recently placing ninth in the state of Maine. In addition, Jenny has been active in many clubs, including Peer Tutoring, Lassiter Buddies, Big/Little Buddies, Berwick Green Alliance and Math Team and co-head of the Recycling Committee.

Jenny is a three-season athlete, participating in twelve seasons of high school sports. She has played on the Varsity Lacrosse team for four years and the Varsity Ice Hockey team for her senior year. This year, the Ice Hockey team won the EIL championship. Jenny was MVP of her JV Ice Hockey team as a junior and earned the Coach’s Award in JV Field Hockey and Varsity Ice Hockey as a senior. Outside of school, Jenny is an avid archer. She competed in two National events and attained Level I and II archery instructor certification. In addition, Jenny is an advanced open water SCUBA diver and has participated in numerous summer programs that have fueled her passion for marine biology. She studied with Island School in Cape Eleuthera and Sea Education Association, a research program sponsored by Wood’s Hole and the Wrigley Institute, among others. During the summer of her junior year, Jenny also went to Costa Rica as part of a community service trip. For her senior project, she is interning with the Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation. This fall, Jenny plans to attend Colby College in Waterville, Maine as a Biology major.

Tucker Trimble is the daughter of Terry and Joan Trimble of Cape Neddick, Maine and Charleston, South Carolina. Tucker was inducted into the Cum Laude Society as a junior at Porter-Gaud School in Charleston, South Carolina.

During her one year at Berwick Academy, Tucker was on both the honor and high honor roll. She received the Departmental Recognition Award for Excellence in Science and was inducted into Berwick Academy’s chapter of the French National Honor Society. The Scholastic Art Awards also awarded one of her photographs a Silver Key.

This year, Tucker ran Varsity Cross Country and played JV Tennis. She was active in Berwick Academy’s community service program throughout the winter and helped organize Berwick’s first Relay for Life team. Last November, Tucker performed in a reading of the play “The Questions” by John Hawkes at York Readers’ Theater. In South Carolina, she participated in both community and school theater productions, including Frenchy in “Grease” and Cinderella in “Cinderella.”

Next year, Tucker will attend Bates College in Lewiston, Maine.

Alanna Wittet, daughter of Neil & Karin Wittet of York, Maine, entered Berwick Academy in the sixth grade where she has maintained high honors throughout her scholastic career. Alanna was inducted into the Cum Laude Society in her junior year and became a member of La Societe Honaraire de Francais as a sophomore. Alanna has also earned a departmental recognition award for science and the Middlebury Book Award for her environmental work.

Alanna has pursued many avenues during her time at the Academy including Varsity Soccer, Lacrosse, and Cross Country as well as dawdling in the visual arts. For the last four years she has participated in the Lassiter "Buddy" program which pairs up students from a rural school in Kentucky with Berwick Academy students as pen-pals. Alanna was a founding member of Berwick Academy's Green Alliance and co-editor of the school newspaper The Cornerstone and has contributed to the Berwick Literary Magazine and served in Community Outreach. During summers she has volunteered at York Hospital.

Alanna's senior project is a "Tech Trash Drive" which will allow the entire Berwick Community to participate in recycling their old electronic equipment in an environmentally friendly and responsible manner. This fall Alanna will be attending Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, PA as a member of the class of 2015.

Allana stated “My time at Berwick Academy has been very rich, I have grown as an active learner been challenged on many levels and have always strived to put my best foot forward. I leave the hilltop with appreciation and gratitude for all this very special place has to offer.”

Alexandra Zannos is the daughter of Anne Crotty Zannos and John Zannos of Rye, New Hampshire. Alex joined the Berwick Academy community her freshman year and fell in love with the Hilltop. Alex participated in the classroom, on the sports fields, and in the art studio. She was inducted into the Cum Laude Society and the National Latin Honor Society her junior year, and the National Art Society her senior year. She has earned several Latin metals, Departmental Recognition Awards, the Smith College Book Award her junior year, and a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship from Johns Hopkins University her senior year. Alex played three varsity sports all four years at Berwick and was captain of the Cross-Country, Skiing, and Lacrosse teams her senior year. Alex loves to paint and has painted both at Berwick and outside of Berwick under the tutelage of Leann Wiley.

While at Berwick, Alex founded the Green Alliance her junior year after reading and living the life of Henry David Thoreau for English 11. She has been active in many different clubs and school activities and has submitted work to the Vernacular, worked in student government, volunteered with the Lassiter Buddies Program, competed in the Maine State Math Meet, and presented a Chemistry Magic show to the Berwick Middle School. During summers, Alex has volunteered at the Seacoast Science Center and with the UNH Phytoplankton Study. Last summer Alex worked at the Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine researching Leukemia. For her senior project, Alex is to organizing the first of hopefully many E-Cycling Drives at Berwick.

Alex graciously thanks her teachers and classmates and her advisor, Mr. Downey; without their support and friendship her education and Berwick Academy experience would not have been as enjoyable. Alex will be attending Stanford University next fall, where she will study physics.
