Moving forward from 390 Congress: A Look Back
Note: On Monday, May 24th, The Portland Press Herald newsroom and other departments will operate from our new address at One City Center in downtown Portland. The Press Herald edition printed for Tuesday, May 25th will be the first produced from our new newsroom.
The original Press Herald building was erected at the corner of Federal and Exchange Streets in 1923. The Congress Street addition was added in 1948.
The printing press (which originally included glass and metal plate production) was moved across the street to 385 Congress Street in 1965.
A tunnel was constructed under Congress Street in 1966 to link the new press operations and allow for easy transfer of stereotype plants and passage for employees. The tunnel still exists.
In 1990, printing operations were moved to their current, modern facility in South Portland.
