Suicide rates in the U.S.

U.S. suicide rate by age group

With 235 suicides, Maine had the 11th highest suicide rate in the country in 2011, according to data compiled this year by the American Association of Suicidology. Wyoming had the highest and the District of Columbia had the lowest suicide rates. In the northeast, Maine’s suicide rate is second only to Vermont, which had the fifth highest in the nation. The isolation of rural living, the high rates of gun ownership and the large percentage of white people, who have a higher rate of suicide than other ethnic groups, contribute to the high suicide rates in Maine and Vermont, said Greg Marley, clinical director for the National Alliance on Mental Illness Maine.
