    Class of 2013 Summa Cum Laude Students

    Clayton Garrett Arundel
    Clayton Arundel is the son of Diane Moxcey and stepson of Darold Moxcey of Saco. Clayton was inducted into the National Honor Society in the spring of his junior year and elected into the Summa Cum Laude Society as a senior. Clayton has been involved in Classics Club, Anime Club, and Table Top Games Club. He has participated in the Feed The Hungry program and has volunteered at various Saco Spirit community events. Clayton plans to attend Gordon College in the fall where he will triple major in Secondary Education, Physics, and Math.

    Samantha Annette Paige Butler
    Samantha Butler is the daughter of Rebecca and Samuel Butler. Throughout her years at Thornton Academy, she has been heavily involved in the performing arts, participating in nine productions with the TA Players, performing and working behind the scenes with costume and makeup design. Samantha sang with Treble Choir for three years, and was a member of TA's Dance Company in her senior year. Samantha looks forward to attending Connecticut College, where she plans to study sociology and to continue her involvement in the arts.

    Adam Mayo Glynn
    Adam Glynn is the son of Paul and Catherine Glynn of Saco. Adam is the president of Thornton Academy's chapter of the National Honor Society, and the co-president of the Thornton Academy Players. He has performed in ten theatrical productions in high school, his favorites being CATS, The Phantom of the Opera, and Romeo & Juliet. He is also an avid singer, and has performed with the All-State choir every year in high school, and the All-Eastern choir in Hartford, CT this past April. Adam enjoys Shakespearean monologues, musical theater, and Hispanic literature. He will attend Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine next year and plans to major in Latin American Studies.

    Meaghan Marie Hamel
    Meaghan Hamel was a member of the National Honor Society and served as secretary and head of the Tutoring Committee. She was also a member of the Interact Club and Pink Ribbon Club. Meaghan was a captain of the Action Team for her junior and senior year and was awarded one of twenty scholarships in the nation for her volunteer efforts. She received a Presidential Scholarship from the University of New England, where she plans to earn her masters degree in Occupational Therapy. She is the daughter of Gary and Debra Hamel of Saco.

    Adilet Issayev
    Adilet Issayev is from Kazakhstan and joined Thornton Academy in the fall of 2011 as a junior. Adilet has served as a ‘prefect,’ assuming a higher level of responsibility and ensuring the dorm community is safe, clean, active, academically-focused and respectful of others. Adilet has volunteered actively to support the larger Saco community and balanced a strong academic schedule while playing a sport every season. He values and respects his education and will continue to take on the next challenge at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

    Karen Price Jacques, Valedictorian
    Karen Jacques is the daughter of Keith and Kathleen Jacques. Karen was named the Valedictorian of the Thornton Academy Class of 2013. She also received the MPA Principal’s Award. Karen played Varsity Field Hockey and Softball all four years of high school and was elected captain of both teams during her senior year. Karen earned a spot on the All-State Field Hockey Academic Team as well as the National Field Hockey Academic Team. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Pink Ribbon Club and Interact Club. She also is a captain of the Thornton Volunteers of America Action Team. Karen will attend Dartmouth College in the fall and plans to study pre-medicine.

    Hoang Anh Thi “Christine” Le
    Hoang Anh Thi (Christine) Le was born in the Ukraine, as the daughter of Thanh Le and Van Doan from Hanoi, Vietnam. Christine has an interest in foreign languages and likes travelling to experience different cultures. During her two years at Thornton Academy in the United States, Christine has completed four high school levels of French. Her extracurricular activities include: cheerleading, softball, volunteering and Math Team. She has also been the President of TA Amnesty International and is active with the Vietnamese American Association in Maine, which successfully organizes Vietnamese New Year in Maine every year. In the fall, Christine will attend the University of Maine on a full international student scholarship. She intends to major in Management with International Business concentration at the Maine School of Business.

    Jessica Lee
    Jessica Lee is the daughter of Rosemarie Maxson and David Lee of Buxton. In this past year she had the privilege of expanding her cultural understanding through an exchange program to Germany, fortifying her strength with the language and teaching her the importance of international relations. Because of this, Jess seeks a degree in linguistics at Cornell University and hopes to work on translation software and research dying languages. She cannot thank her supportive teachers at Thornton Academy enough for helping her through these four years and hope that the great opportunities to which she had access continue to help others.

    Renée Jocelyn Lessard
    Renée Lessard is the daughter of Richard and Janice Lessard of Arundel. Renée is a member of the National Honor Society and a member of the All-Academic Team, as well as a captain, for Cross Country. She is the co-president of Classics Club and the Copy Editor for the school's literary magazine, INK. Renée also enjoys a position as a Catholic Youth Leadership Team member, planning yearly events for youth across the state. She is attending the Honors Program at Susquehanna University this fall, with a focus in Communications.

    Connor Robert McCrum
    My academic talents and interests are math and science, which have been my favorite courses at TA. I was a two-year starter for the football team and a captain this year when we won the state championship. I was named to the all-conference team my junior and senior year as a defensive end, and the all-academic team my senior year. I was a member of the National Honor Society and enjoyed volunteering at local soup kitchens. I also enjoy fishing, golfing, and attending Bible Baptist Church. Next year I will attend Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a major in mechanical engineering and a minor in business and I plan to play football.

    Raquel Patricia Miller
    Raquel Miller was born in Cuenca, Ecuador and adopted by her parents, Scott Miller and Amy Juneau. She is also the stepdaughter of alumna, Sharon Kelley. She was a part of the tutoring committee in Thornton’s 2013 Chapter of the National Honor Society. During the past four years of high school, she has participated in Field Hockey, Diving, and Lacrosse. Outside of school during her senior year, she worked as a barista at the Saco Starbucks. After high school, she plans to attend the University of Southern Maine to study English Literature and Spanish.

    Allyson Anne Milliard
    Allyson Milliard, daughter of Richard and Angelique Milliard of Saco, is a member of the National Honor Society and is the Secretary of the class of 2013. She has played three years of basketball and four years of lacrosse at TA, and avidly supports all other Thornton teams. For the past three years, she has volunteered time each week in Mrs. Cote’s fifth grade classroom at C.K. Burns School. Allyson works as a counselor for the Saco Parks and Recreation’s Summer Camp Program. Next year, Allyson will attend Tulane University in New Orleans to study International Relations and Pre-Law.

    Rachel SuDanDan Moody
    Rachel Moody, daughter of Julie and Robert Moody, was born in Suzhou, China and adopted at three months old by her loving parents. She was raised in Saco, Maine and has been active in her community and hardworking in the classroom since she can remember. Her sophomore year, she had the opportunity to return to China with Thornton's Cultural Connections class. Her senior year she was one of three TA girls swim team captains. She plans to attend the University of Miami, where she will explore many different academic programs, as well as a new culture.

    Quang Max Nguyen, Salutatorian
    Quang Phuoc Minh Nguyen is the son of Nguyen Minh Tuan and Phung Kim Dung of Hanoi Vietnam. Quang was named the 2013 salutatorian. He is an active member of the Thornton Academy Debate Team as a competitor in Lincoln-Douglas Debate Novice Division. He also serves as a literary editor for TA’s arts and literary magazine. He has worked as an AP Chemistry Lab Assistant, a literary translator and a volunteer at Sao Mai's center for Autistic Children in Hanoi, Vietnam. He is a member of Thornton Academy's Varsity Swimming team and is excited to attend Bates College.

    Stephanie Elizah-Jeanne Pare
    Stephanie will be attending the University of New England studying Mathematics and Art while on the pre-med track. At Thornton she was a member of the Math Team, National Honors Society, and Wind Ensemble. She was a state qualifier on the Varsity Swim Team for four years, she received the Captains award for three consecutive seasons, and in her Senior year received a YCSOA scholarship at Southwesterns, as well as recognition for MISL All-Academic Swim Team and SMAA All Academic Team. Her parents are Bradford and Heidi Pare both graduates of Thornton Academy class of 1990.

    Audrey Hannah Puleio
    Audrey Puleio, daughter of Robin and Mary Puleio, grew up in Saco. Audrey is a member of the National Honors Society and vice president of the class of 2013. Junior year, she had an internship through the Maine Space Grant Consortium at the University of Southern Maine where she studied aquatic ecosystems with a focus on alewives. All four years, Audrey ran cross country, was on the swim team, and played lacrosse. She was captain of the swim team her junior and senior year. While academics were a major part of Audrey’s high school experience, she is committed to volunteering and helping others in the community. Future plans include traveling the world and continuing in her love of yoga. Audrey is excited for the next adventure at Bates College where she plans on majoring in environmental studies or biochemistry.

    Zihao David Wang
    I am David Wang and my Chinese name is Zihao Wang. I have lived and studied at Thornton Academy for two years. My interests are playing basketball, video games, and hanging out with my friends. I think that the summa cum laude award is due not only to my hard work, but also to all of the support that Thornton Academy, and my dorms parents and friends have provided to me. My parents are so proud of me, and I just want to say "Thank you!!" to them because it is my parents who provided me the chance to study in such an excellent school. Next year, I plan to attend the University of California, Irvine where I hope to prepare for becoming the CEO of a business. Onward!

    Emma Joan Waterhouse
    Emma Waterhouse is the daughter of Jerry and Samantha Waterhouse of Dayton. She is a member of the National Honors Society and Interact Club. Through NHS and Interact she has volunteered with Mary’s Walk, the soup kitchen, and many other school functions and local charity events. Throughout her four years she has also played softball and basketball where she made the All-Academic team her senior year. Emma plans on attending the University of New England in the fall where she will major in Biochemistry.

    Danni Zhao
    Danni Zhao is the daughter of Lanfen Yi and Zhongmin Zhao of Ningbo, China. She likes to paint and draw in her free time because she finds it relaxing. Danni plans to go to the University of California, Irvine next year to prepare for a career in the financial industry at first. She someday hopes to start her own business.
