    Cum Laude Society

    Nyanen Deng is the daughter of Sarah Gai of Portland. She has achieved High Honors throughout her years in Upper School, and is the recipient of a Literary/Cultural Appreciation award this year. She was elected to the Cum Laude Society as a senior. Nyanen has acted in performances at both Waynflete and the Portland Stage Company. She plays the violin, piano, guitar and bass ukelele, and has been a member of the Waynflete Music Club for two years. She is a member of the Upper School Chorus, has participated in the A Capella group, and is a member of the Pihcintu Multicultural Chorus. Nyanen has participated in community service activities at the Wayside Soup Kitchen, the Parkside Fun Mentoring Program, and Learning Works, and has been a Waynflete Admission Guide. She has also worked as a counselor for Waynflete Summer Programs. Nyanen has been a member of the Varsity Field Hockey team for three years and has played on the Varsity Girls Basketball and the Junior Varsity Tennis teams. She will attend Wesleyan University.

    Josh Espy is the son of James and Lynne Espy Jr. of Freeport. He has achieved High Honors, was named a Waynflete Scholar, and is the recipient of the Barbara Freeman Literary Scholarship award, the Josephine Detmer History award, and the Irvil K. Pease award. Josh was elected to the Cum Laude Society in his junior year. He has been a member of Mock Trial for four years, is a member of the Science Olympiad team, and has participated in Project Story Boost reading to elementary aged students, the Waynflete Community Service Activity, various peforming arts clubs, and served as a Waynflete Admission Guide. He received a Community Service recognition. During his four-year three-season varsity athletic career, Josh has captained both Waynflete’s Nordic ski and Cross Country teams, and he has played Varsity Lacrosse for four years. He is also an accomplished multi-instrument musician and composer who has performed with his own bluegrass band for years. Josh plans to attend Middlebury College.

    Katherine Harwood is the daughter of William Harwood and Ellen Alderman of Yarmouth. She has achieved Honors and High Honors, was elected to the Cum Laude Society as a junior, and was the recipient of a Community Service recognition. She spent a semester of her junior year in the CityTerm program in New York City. Katherine has volunteered for four years at a literacy acquisition program at a neighborhood elementary school. She has also volunteered for Equality Maine, Habitat For Humanity, and the Maine Audubon Society. She was a participant in Model United Nations, and has performed in a Waynflete musical. She was a member of the Maine state championship Science Olympiad team. Katherine is a member of the Varsity Soccer team, serving as captain her junior and senior years, as well as the Swimming, JV Basketball, and JV Lacrosse teams. Katherine will attend Tufts University.

    Colin Laurence is the son of Henry and Sarah Laurence of Brunswick. Elected to the Cum Laude Society as a junior, he has achieved High Honors and was named a Waynflete Scholar. He is the recipient of the Magaret Chenery Math Award. Colin participated in a NASA research program this year, and worked with his physics teacher and three other students at a NASA institute at Caltech. He was a member of the Maine state championship Science Olympiad team and was captain of the Science Bowl team this year. He was a member of the Maine state championship Math Team this year. Colin has participated in dramatic productions at Waynflete, was a member of Mock Trial, and the Chess Club. He has been a member of the Nordic ski team for three years, runs on the Cross Country team, and has participated in Soccer and Crew. Colin will attend Middlebury College.

    Zexi (James) Liu is the son of Jie Liu and Li Zeng of China. James came to Waynflete at the beginning of his junior year. He was named a Waynflete Scholar and was elected to the Cum Laude Society as a senior. He is a member of Waynflete’s Finance Club, has helped organize the School’s virtual stock market game, and has been part of the championship Federal Reserve Cup team. He was a member of the School’s LifeSmarts Challenge team that, after winning the state tournament, went to Atlanta, Georgia to compete at the national level. He was also a member of the Maine state championship Math Team, and the Maine state championship Science Olympiad team. James has been a member of Model United Nations. He is a member of the Junior Varsity Tennis Team. He will attend Brandeis University.

    Alexander Majercik is the son of Stephen Majercik and Faith Barnes of Brunswick. Xander is a National Merit semi-finalist and has received High Honors. The recipient of the Margaret Chenery Math Award, he was named a Waynflete Scholar and elected to the Cum Laude Society as a junior. Xander was a member of the Maine state championship Science Olympiad team and the Science Bowl team, and traveled to the NASA institute at Caltech last summer with his physics teacher and three other students to participate in a NASA research project. He was also a member of the Maine state championship Math Team. He has served as a reader for College Guild correspondence courses taken by prisoners and he now serves on the Board of Directors for that organization. Xander is a four-year Varsity Soccer and Lacrosse player, serving as captain of both teams this year. He will attend Williams College.

    Merilla Michael is the daughter of Michael Abraha and Regat Mebrahtu of Portland. She is an Honors student and was elected to the Cum Laude Society as a senior. She is also a member of the Waynflete Community Service Activity and has volunteered at numerous local organizations. She was a member of the Maine state championship Math and Science Olympiad teams. Merilla has played classical piano for 12 years at the Portland Conservatory of Music, and was accepted into the Aspiring Artists Program this year. She has participated in the International Piano Festival for the past five years. Merilla has been a member of the Varsity Field Hockey team for three years, and has served as captain this year of both the Field Hockey and JV Lacrosse teams. She will attend Tufts University.

    Amelia Mitchell is the daughter of Cynde Putney of Peaks Island and Rod Mitchell of Cape Elizabeth. She has achieved High Honors, was named a Waynflete Scholar, and was elected to the Cum Laude Society her junior year. Amelia, who received a Community Service recognition, has taught in the Freshmen Seminar Program, and has been a leader in the GSTA activity. She has played Varsity Soccer for four years, and has been a member of the Track, Basketball, Tennis, and Lacrosse teams. Amelia will attend Hamilton College.

    Jo Moore is the daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Moore of Freeport. She was elected to the Cum Laude Society as a junior, has been named a Waynflete Scholar, and received a Linguistic Excellence award this year. She was a member of the Maine state championship Science Olympiad team. She has been a participant in Project Story Boost reading to elementary aged students, Waynflete’s GSTA, and Girls Leadership. She has been a member of the Upper School Chorus, often singing as a soloist. Jo has been a two-year captain of the Varsity Field Hockey team, was named Outstanding Player of the Year, and was named to the All Academic and the All-Star teams. Jo will attend Amherst College.

    Amelia Neilson is the daughter of William and Pia Neilson of Arrowsic. She is the recipient of the Vergn Hewes Science award and a Linguistic Excellence award. She has been named a Waynflete Scholar for each of her four years of Upper School, and was elected to the Cum Laude Society in her junior year. She has been a member of the 2013 Maine state championship Science Olympiad team for three years, and participated in a NASA research project this year, working at a NASA institute at Caltech with her physics teacher and three other students. Amelia has participated in School Year Abroad, spending a summer in China. She has participated in Project Story Boost reading to elementary aged students and has served as a Waynflete Admission Guide. She is a three-season varsity athlete, participating on the Field Hockey, Crew, and Swimming teams. Amelia will attend Carleton College.

    Mesa Robinov is the daughter of Kelsey Robinov and Gary Robinov, both of Portland. Mesa has been a High Honors student throughout Upper School and was elected to the Cum Laude Society as a senior. She received a Performing Arts award this year and has been a leader of Waynflete’s Community Service Activity. Mesa is a member of RAPS peer counseling and has volunteered in the Development Office for four years. She has been involved in numerous dramatic and musical productions at Waynflete, and was a member of the One Act Festival team that took first place in the Class B Regional competition this year. She is an avid singer who has taken voice lessons for years, and has been a member of the Upper School Chorus, often serving as a soloist. Mesa will attend Brandeis University.

    Benjamin Shapiro is the son of Jonathan Shapiro and Julie Boesky of Portland. He has achieved Honors and High Honors, and was elected to the Cum Laude Society as a senior. He is a member of RAaW, and was one of only 16 students invited to attend the Seeds of Peace camp in 2011. Ben’s passion for music led to the founding of his own DJ business four years ago, and he was selected last year as one of 32 students to attend the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at New York University. He is a member of the Tennis team, serving as co-captain for the last two years, and has been a member of the JV Basketball team. Ben has also worked as a tennis instructor for Waynflete Summer Programs. He will attend New York University.

    Thomas Spagnola is the son of Susan and Joseph Spagnola of Cape Elizabeth. Elected to the Cum Laude Society as a senior, Thomas has achieved Honors and High Honors and was named a Waynflete Scholar. He received the Community Service Award for his volunteer efforts with the South Portland Boys and Girls Club, Preble Street and Project Story Boost. Thomas has captained the Varsity Golf Team and received numerous awards in this sport. He also captained the JV Basketball team and was a member of the Varsity Baseball and JV Tennis teams. Thomas has played the piano for 12 years. He has been a Waynflete Admission Guide, founded the Waynflete Sports activity and participated in Model United Nations and Current Events. Thomas will attend Bowdoin College in the fall.

    Catherine Veroneau is the daughter of Nancy and Vincent Veroneau of Portland. She has achieved Honors, High Honors, was named a Waynflete Scholar, and was elected to the Cum Laude Society as a senior. Catherine has been involved in Operation Smile, Habitat For Humanity, and Global Spotlight, and received a Community Service Award her junior year. She has served as a Waynflete Admission Guide and has volunteered at Maine Medical Center. Catherine was recognized as a Four-Year Varsity Tri-Athlete this year for Basketball, Lacrosse, and Cross Country. She will attend Boston College.

    Martha Veroneau is the daughter of Nancy and Vincent Veroneau of Portland. She has achieved Honors and High Honors, and has received a Community Service Award. She was elected to the Cum Laude Society as a senior. She has participated in Habitat For Humanity, Safe Passage, Global Spotlight, and has served as a Waynflete Admission Guide. Martha has been a member of the Steel Band and the Backstage Crew. She was recognized this year as a Four-Year Varsity Tri-Athlete for Basketball, Lacrosse, and Cross Country, for which she was captain. She also received a Student Athlete award this year. Martha has received numerous regional and state awards for her athletic achievements including Miss Maine Basketball and the Butler Award. Martha will attend Boston College.
