American Folk Festival kicks off in Bangor

Organizers are expecting more than 100,000 people over the three days.

The Associated Press

BANGOR — Good weather is predicted as the American Folk Festival gets under way for three days of music, dance and performing arts along Bangor's waterfront.

The festival, which kicks off Friday and runs through Sunday, features 16 musical groups playing on four stages along the Penobscot River. Organizers are expecting more than 100,000 people over the three days.

This year's performers run the gamut from western swing, blues and bluegrass, to Franco, Cajun, Irish, gospel, doo wop, and Tamburitza. The festival also includes dance, crafts, food and demonstrations.

Bangor was the host of the 64th, 65th and 66th National Folk Festivals from 2002 to 2004. In 2005, the American Folk Festival was introduced as a continuation of the festival tradition.
