Coast Guard's largest tall ship at Maine State Pier

The Coast Guard says the cutter Eagle is 295 feet long, has 24,000 square feet of sail and 6 miles of rigging.

PORTLAND — The historic Coast Guard cutter Eagle will be open to the public on the Portland waterfront.

The 295-foot tall ship is arriving Friday and will be moored at the Maine State Pier as part of its 2012 cruise.

It's open to the public from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.

The ship was built in 1936 and operated by Nazi Germany to train cadets for the German Navy. It was taken by the U.S. as a war prize following World War II and now serves as a Coast Guard training vessel.

It has 24,000 square feet of sail and 6 miles of rigging.

Its home port is New London, Conn.
