Great Schooner Race sets sail in Maine

The Associated Press

ROCKLAND — Dozens of Maine schooners are setting sail from Rockland for a friendly race to Camden.

The Maine Windjammer Association's 36th annual Great Schooner Race gets under way today, when up to 20 historic schooners take off from Rockland and sail to Camden.

The informal competition aims to take passengers and spectators back in time to when cargo-laden schooners out of Maine would race to market to get the best prices for their loads.

The race begins at 11 a.m. in Rockland Harbor and is expected to end about 3 p.m. in Camden.
