Mellencamp, Stephen King musical to debut in Indiana

The Associated Press

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — A musical by John Mellencamp, writer Stephen King and T Bone Burnett will debut in Bloomington this fall before embarking on a tour of 20 U.S. cities.

"Ghost Brothers of Darkland County" will debut Oct. 10 at the Indiana University Auditorium.

The Herald-Times reported Sunday the musical has been 13 years in the making. The collaboration was inspired by an Indiana cabin on land owned by Mellencamp that, according to legend, was the site where one brother killed another over a girl and later died in a car crash with the girl.

King wrote an outline that developed into a musical with music by Mellencamp and Burnett. The story is now set in Mississippi and involves two sets of brothers.

The tour is scheduled to run through May 2014.
