From staff reports
Frost Gully Gallery, 1159 U.S. Route 1 in Freeport, on Aug. 25 opens an exhibit of new and recent paintings by Maine artist Janice Anthony. Anthony, who works in acrylics, will be welcomed at a reception from 4 to 6 p.m.
“Resting Boulders,” acrylic by Janice Anthony.
Anthony’s work has been shown in museums and galleries across the country, including recently at the Arnot Art Museum in Elmire, N.Y., and the Center for Maine Contemporary Art in Rockport.
In her artist statement, Anthony writes, “The content of my paintings lies beyond the visible features of woods and rocks and water. My intention is to convey the sense of a place; the moving air, the solidity of rock and the transience of water and the strength of the ground beneath ...
“A glimpse of landscape becomes a structure on which to put paint, and that place becomes submerged in the process of painting. Place and paint merge in a synthesis that is something new, apart from that which I originally encountered. A painting emerges from my meeting with it, and the place itself floats back away into the wilderness.”
