PhoPa Gallery, located at 132 Washington Ave. in Portland, will present “Black White + Blue,” an exhibition of photographs by John Goodman, which is on display from Friday through Feb. 22.

The exhibition opens with a public reception from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday – coinciding with Portland’s First Friday Art Walk.

Goodman, who is known for his treatment of the human body, will present several photographs of boxers from his “Times Square Gym” book. The gallery is also showing Goodman’s images from his backstage Boston Ballet series and work from the streets of Havana, Cuba.

“I am drawn to the human body and its contradictions,” Goodman says in a press release. “I explore the contest between light and dark, power and grace, grit and tenderness.”

Also included in the exhibition are images shot on Kodachrome and Ektachrome transparencies in the 1970s and 1980s. The images were recently discovered in a studio and printed for the first time in 2010.

Goodman’s work is in permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
