The gallery at 21 Winter St. will host an artists' reception from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday featuring live jazz by Steve Lindsay and friends.

Known as a printmaker, Beckman of Stonington recently made the transition from black-and-white wood engraving and woodcuts to painting and color.

Her paintings in the show depict scenes of far Down East, rocks and islands, stone piers, rain-washed country roads and barns.

Beckman's work is in the collections of the Farnsworth Museum, the Portland Museum of Art, the Boston Public Library, the University of New England and Harvard University, as well as many private collections.

New to the gallery, Bourne represents the intervals of the show's title. For her, "interval" represents the space between pieces of color and between brush strokes in her paintings. These may correspond with the intervals between islands; between land, sea and sky; or between patterns on water.

Bourne's paintings are in public and private collections in the United States and the United Kingdom. She teaches at the University of Maine, Orono; Maine Maritime Academy and privately.

The exhibition will run through Sept. 4. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Saturday. Call 596-0800 or go to jonathanfrostgallery.com.
