Cultural initiative will team Maine, New Brunswick

Gov. John Baldacci has signed a memorandum of understanding with New Brunswick Premier Shawn Graham to establish a Maine-New Brunswick Cultural Initiative.

The memorandum recognizes historical, cultural and artistic ties between Maine and the Canadian province. The agreement calls for exploration of collaborative cross-border cultural projects, as well as business and cultural trade opportunities.

Among specific projects the cultural initiative will support is the 2014 World Acadian Congress. That event will be in an area encompassing northern Maine; Temiscouata, Quebec; and northwestern New Brunswick.

Baldacci and Graham signed the memo during the recent Conference of New England Governors and Eastern Canadian Premiers in Lenox, Mass. As part of the agreement, Maine and New Brunswick each will appoint one person to serve as the point of contact for the tasks outlined in the agreement.

PORTLAND

Lecture series offers ‘New Woman in Maine Woods’

At noon Wednesday, the Victoria Mansion, with support from the Maine Humanities Council, will present the first of three illustrated lectures on “New and True: The Modern Woman in Maine, 1890-1940.” Nan Cumming, executive director of Portland Trails, will speak about “Diana — the New Woman in the Maine Woods.”

Diana, the Roman goddess of the hunt, was a beloved figure in 19th-century art and literature. And with Maine’s first wilderness guide, Cornelia “Fly Rod” Crosby, as a role model, women in the late 1800s began to escape the pressures and disease of the cities by camping, hunting and fishing in Maine.

This lecture will explore the years between 1895 and 1910, which were especially rich in tourist publications that encouraged women to venture into the Maine wilderness.

Art auction, dinner is Aug. 1 at Owls Head museum

The Center for Maine Contemporary Art’s benefit auction and dinner will be Aug. 1 at Owls Head Transportation Museum, and the work available for auction will be displayed at CMCA beginning Wednesday.

An opening reception will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday. The work will remain on view through July 31.

The reception and preview are free. Tickets to the auction and dinner cost $125 and can be ordered by calling 236-2875.

The auction is CMCA’s largest fundraiser. Artists have the choice of donating either a portion or all proceeds to CMCA. This year, a third of the artists donated their work outright as the center reorganizes from a financial crisis.

SOUTH PORTLAND

Cavallo earns international award for engineering

Jon R. Cavallo, who serves as paint engineer for the Maine Center for Creativity’s “Art All Around” project in Portland Harbor, received an international award for engineering expertise.

Cavallo of South Berwick received the Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow from the ASTM International Committee D33 on Protective Coating and Lining Work for Power Generation Facilities. The award is the highest organizational recognition for contributions to ASTM standards activities.

Cavallo is providing pro bono paint engineering services to “Art All Around,” which involves the painting of 16 Sprague oil storage tanks in South Portland. When completed in 2012, it will be the world’s largest public art painting.

MCC is continuing to raise funds for the project. To date, more than $655,000 has been raised.

VINALHAVEN

Benefit for Vinalhaven Land Trust is July 30 to Aug. 1

Artists and conservationists will collaborate for “Art for Land’s Sake,” an exhibition and sale of work to benefit the Vinalhaven Land Trust, from July 30 to Aug. 1.

A preview party for members and artists is scheduled for July 30, following the land trust’s annual meeting. The show will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 31 and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 1. The auction begins at 1 p.m.

Nearly 40 artists will participate, and several created work specifically for the event. The Vinalhaven Land Trust will post images at vinalhavenlandtrust.org.

WISCASSET

Botkin is Maine Art Gallery’s artist in residence on July 31

Ed Botkin will be an artist in residence at the Maine Art Gallery on Warren Street in Wiscasset on July 31.

He has been working in art for more than 40 years, and for the past 15 years has concentrated on realistic oil paintings. He and his wife spend their summers at Tenants Harbor.

Barnako to display crafted jewelry, discuss her work

Wiscasset resident Donna Barnako will display handcrafted jewelry at DebraElizabeth’s, 55 Water St., Wiscasset, on Thursday and Friday. There will be a reception from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Barnako will be in the shop discussing her work and demonstrating jewelry-making techniques such as painting and stenciling on silk, bead crochet and wire working. She has been making jewelry for 10 years and teaches metalworking, wirework, and beading in Virginia. She is a summer resident of Wiscasset at Clark’s Point.

Annual art auction slated for Aug. 7 at Barn Gallery

The Ogunquit Art Association’s annual art auction will be Aug. 7 at the Barn Gallery. Doors open at 7 p.m. and bidding will begin at 8 p.m.

The work will be previewed from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 6 and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 7.

ArtinMe, new juried art exhibit, calling for entries

ArtinMe, a new statewide juried art exhibition, will be on view Oct. 15 to Nov. 16 at Boothbay Region Art Foundation, 1 Townsend Ave., Boothbay Harbor.

Organizers are currently seeking entries.

The show’s jurists are Philip Isaacson, art critic and writer whose column appears in the Maine Sunday Telegram, and Dennis Gleason of Gleason Fine Art galleries in Portland and Boothbay Harbor.
