Haynes Galleries in Thomaston will host an exhibition of portrait photography by Yousuf Karsh, one of the most important photographers of the 20th century. Karsh is best known for his grumpy portrait of Winston Churchill. His photography shows a talent for capturing an intimate moment as well as the essence of a personality. Karsh photographed hundreds of influential and famous people during his lifetime.

The exhibition features 15 large-scale portraits as well as vintage photographs by the artist. Included are portraits of artists Pablo Picasso, Georgia O'Keeffe, Joan Miro and Marc Chagall, and Finnish composer Jean Sibelius and the Spanish cellist Pablo Casals. Some of the greatest thinkers of the 20th century such as Albert Einstein, Albert Schweitzer, Helen Keller with Polly Thompson, and Jacque Couseteau, and writers Ernest Hemingway, George Bernard Shaw and Robert Frost are also included in the exhibit. "The Greatest" himself, Muhammad Ali, also will be on display.

Harlan Baker will stage his one-man show "Jimmy Higgins" at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 14-15 at Old Port Playhouse, 119 Temple St., Portland.

Set on the eve of the 1960 presidential race, Jimmy Higgins is being interviewed by a college student about his life. Higgins recounts his days as a newspaper boy in Sandusky, Ohio, during the World War I, his meeting with Eugene Debs and other radicals opposed to American participation in the war, his experiences in the LaFollette campaign for president in 1924 and his experiences a labor reporter covering the union organizing drives of tenant farmers and auto workers in the 1930s.

Baker is a member of Acorn Production's Naked Shakespeare ensemble, where he has acted and directed for the past five years. He is currently an adjunct lecturer in the theater department of the University of Southern Maine and an instructor at John Robert Powers studio in Boston.
