PORTLAND - Mad Horse Theatre opens its 25th season this week in a new home. The company, known for presenting edgy and thought-provoking theater, has become the theater company in residence at Lucid Stage's new performance space at 29 Baxter Blvd.

The season begins with "Six Degrees of Separation," a John Guare play that explores the existential premise that everyone is connected to everyone else in the world by a chain of no more than six acquaintances. The show opens for previews on Thursday and Friday, and the opening night gala will be Saturday. It runs through Oct. 24.
The plot was inspired by the real-life story of David Hampton, a con man who managed to convince a number of people in the 1980s that he was the son of actor Sidney Poitier. After the play became a success, Hampton was tried and acquitted for harassment of Guare.
Peter Brown directs the Mad Horse production.
The rest of the Mad Horse season includes Edward Albee's "The Goat, or Who is Sylvia," opening Jan. 20; "The Late Henry Moss" by Sam Shepard, opening March 20; and "Spring Awakening" by Frank Wedekind, opening April 20.
