YARMOUTH — The Pytheas Center for Contemporary Music presents Yarmouth Contemporary Music Days 2011 April 29-30, featuring Maine composers, musicians, educators, artists and students.

The first concert is “Sound Art — Explorations in Sound and Music,” at 7:30 p.m. April 29 at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, 396 Gilman Road, Yarmouth.

This concert will feature electroacoustic music and musique concrete, as well as live performances by Vinny Fuerst, director of the Pytheas Center. Composers include Pierre Henry, Vladimir Ussachevsky, Delia Derbyshire, Arnold Schoenberg and Arvo Part, among others.

The second concert is “Ten by Ten — 10 Works by 10 Composers,” at 7:30 p.m. April 30, also at St. Bartholomew’s. This concert features 10 pieces by 10 contemporary composers presented by local composers and artists, including Greg Hall, Robin Jellis, Nathan Kolosko, Bill Matthews, Joshua DeScherer, Ross Lee Finney, Philip Glass and others.

In coordination with Yarmouth Contemporary Music Days, a 10 by 5 New Music Listening Group has been formed and is open to new listeners throughout April. This adjunct to the festival brings together composers, musicians and music lovers in an ongoing dialog and exploration of contemporary music via pytheasmusic.org.

Pytheas Center for Contemporary Music is a Maine-based nonprofit organization that promotes contemporary concert music. The festival is funded by Yarmouth Arts, a nonprofit organization committed to encouraging arts and cultural activities within the community.

All events are free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted at the door of each event and go toward funding the Pytheas Center. For information, call 846-6658.
