A 1961 Press Herald aerial photograph shows Lincoln Park in downtown Portland, looking south towards the Old Port and waterfront. The Cumberland County Courthouse and federal U.S. District Courthouse can be seen along the park’s southern edge, on Federal Street.

As can be seen in the 2016 Google Earth view of the same area, the eastern portion of Lincoln Park and dozens of Old Port buildings were bulldozed later in the 1960s to make way for the widened Franklin Street.

According to the accompanying caption, “Gorham’s Corner was renamed George W. Sullivan Square at exerciesd sponsored by Philip B. Frothingham Post, VFW, despite original objections at City Hall. City manager James E. Barlow had advised against naming the corner for the Army private, who was the first fraternity house district man to lose his life during World War II. The City Council decided it was fitting, however. Left to right: Mrs. Robert Howell, Sullivan’s sister, Mrs. Margaret Sullivan, his mother, and Floyd C. Chase, commander of the Frothingham Post.”

Today, the same junction of Center, Fore and York Streets at the edge of Portland’s Old Port is still commonly known as Gorham’s Corner, and is best known as the site of a memorial to Portland native and film director John Ford (pictured below).

“Get the message? Mercy Hospital wants this rooming house at 92 State Street and the rest of the block below the hospital for its expansion program. Owner Ray W. Stetson would rather not move but he eventually quoted a price for the house. The hospital said it was too high. Tenant Robert Tilton put up this sign to let the hospital know how he feels about things. The problem will be handled by the Portland Renewal Authority which can take the property by eminent domain.”

As seen in the September 2015 photograph of the same corner (at left), the rooming house eventually lost its battle – replaced not by an expanded hosptial, but by the 100 State Street senior housing complex.

A photograph from page 12 of the May 12, 1947, Portland Press Herald shows a celebration at home plate of the ballfield now known as Hadlock Field. According to the original caption, “Lou Tuminelli, whose fine play is making the Portland fans forget Tommy Siok, gets the glad hand from Captain Paul Gaulin and Johnny Dennis after slamming a four-bagger in the fifth frame to score Dennis also. The (Manchester) Giants halted the Pilots’ three-game win streak, 6-3.”

Downtown Portland’s Congress Street in the 1990s was decidedly less vibrant than it is today. This 1995 photograph from the Press Herald print archives shows the large vacant storefront formerly occupied by the F.W. Woolworth 5 & 10 store shortly before the building was renovated for an L.L. Bean outlet store.

The same building, shown below on July 29, 2015, has been home to Reny’s since 2011.

The black and white photograph above, which ran in the April 8, 1969, Portland Evening Express, shows heavy machinery demolishing Old Port buildings along Middle Street in order to clear a path for the new Franklin Street Arterial.

The finished result – visible in the 2015 photo – has been the subject of a years-long planning study, recently adopted into the City of Portland’s Comprehensive Plan, to make the street smaller, safer and more accessible to foot traffic.
