"ALTER EGOS," starring Danny Masterson and Sean Lennon. Refreshingly low-key take on the now-ubiquitous superhero format offers some seriously un-dynamic heroes, formerly beloved crime-fighters having fallen well out of vogue with the general public, who now regard them as meddling freaks in embarrassing outfits. Existential crises and humiliation ensue. For the most part eschewing the effects-laden slapstick of such somewhat similar efforts as "Mystery Men" and "The Specials," writer-director Jordan Galland truly attempts to examine the inner psyche of a modern-day superhero, coming up with some intriguing food for thought in between the laughs and cringes, neither of which are in short supply. A little-seen but worthy effort that provides some thoughtful clues as to why the public continues to clamor for such films as "The Avengers." Rated R. Running time: 1:21

Suggested retail price: $29.99

"COLOR ME OBSESSED: A FILM ABOUT THE REPLACEMENTS," documentary. The 'Mats get their due in this informative and engaging doc from director and superfan Gorman Bechard, who gathers a colorful roster of longtime fans of all stripes, including George "Norm" Wendt of "Cheers" fame, comedian and former Kid in the Hall Dave Foley, actor Tom Arnold and journalist David Carr of the New York Times, just to name a few diehards. The hardscrabble Minnesota quartet, led by the famously irascible Paul Westerberg, rocked and drank their way into the hearts of music fans from 1979 to 1991, touring relentlessly and putting on shows that were revered for their musicianship and energy as much as for their often inebriated chaos. Really more about the lifestyle of your average rabid music fan than about the band themselves, "Obsessed" provides one excellent anecdote after another, and don't be surprised if you find yourself en route to Bull Moose after the credits have rolled. Not rated; contains language. Running time: 2:03

Suggested retail price: $19.95
