Music and Nightlife: Feel the Love with Franti at the State

MICHAEL FRANTI has probably brightened a lot of people's lives with the power of his music during his long career, but now the musician who blends funk, reggae, jazz and folk has made it official. In August, he launched his Do It For the Love Foundation to create "unforgettable" and personal concert experiences for people facing illness or other serious challenges. Franti and his band, Spearhead, will play the State Theatre on Friday.

Art and Theater: Sharks and Jets to rumble in Ogunquit

OGUNQUIT PLAYHOUSE presents one of the most popular Broadway musicals of all time, "West Side Story." The Leonard Bernstein-Stephen Sondheim score features the classic songs "Something's Coming," "Tonight," "America," "I Feel Pretty" and "Somewhere."

IF YOU CAN'T make it to a taping of "Antiques Roadshow" to get your antiques valued by experts, head over to "Antiques Appraisal Day" on Saturday. For $5 per item, you can get your treasures appraised by the owners of Foreside Antiques.

Music and Nightlife: Fists will fly when Pubcrawlers rock out

NEW ENGLAND CELTIC and Irish punk are two labels used for the music of The Pubcrawlers. But even more appropriate may be the band's own description on its website: "throw-your-fist-in-the-air-and-sing-along" music. So practice throwing your fist in the air for a few hours, then go check The Pubcrawlers out on Saturday.

Art and Theater: Bates museum shows Abbott photographs

THE WORK of one of Maine's best-known and most-loved photographers will be shown at Bates College Museum of Art beginning Friday. Berenice Abbott published her landmark book, "Portrait of Maine," in 1968. Bates acquired the original photographs in 2005, and this show features a selection of those images.

Et Cetera: Picking of the week: Shaker apple festival

IT'S APPLE TIME in Maine again. Kick off the sweet season with a visit to the Shaker Hill Apple Festival in Alfred. The festival includes a juried arts and crafts fair, live music, a yard sale, a book sale, antique car rides, pig raffles, and apple and pumpkin picking at three locations spread out along Shaker Road.
