In case you were wondering, The Psychedelic Furs put on an incredible show recently at Asylum, and singer Richard Butler sounded as sensational as ever. That said, I’d like to focus on the band that opened for The Furs. It was local act Sunset Hearts, and it was my first time seeing them live.
They were so good that I barely let singer Casey McCurry get off the stage and catch his breath before shoving my business card in his hand and declaring my love for the band. There were seven of them on stage that night, and they all contributed to the electro indie-pop awesomeness of their sound.

ON THE NEW MUSIC FRONT, I’d like to give a bullhorn-loud shout-out to Mr. Spencer Albee and congratulate him on the release of “Spencer.” You can pick it up in CD and vinyl form at Bull Moose Music stores. Look for an interview with Albee and a review of the CD in the coming weeks. And hey, the “Spencer” album release show is July 20 at Port City Music Hall. P.S.: Another shout-out for getting a slot on the KahBang line-up in Bangor.

I KNOW I speak for all of the fans here in Maine of experimental folk duo Brown Bird when I send lots of love and healing to you, David Lamb. Lamb was diagnosed with leukemia just a few weeks ago, and the duo’s tour came to a grinding halt after a trip to a Texas ER brought with it the news of a low hemoglobin count and, soon after, a leukemia diagnosis.
At present, Lamb is undergoing chemotherapy treatments, and he and his wife, MorganEve Swain (the other half of Brown Bird) are lying low in their home state of Rhode Island.
One ray of sunshine is that fans donated more than $60,000 to a fund to help with medical expenses, as Lamb, like many other musicians, is uninsured and depends on his ability to tour to pay the bills. Visit Brownbird online at Facebook and brownbird.net.
