Music and Nightlife: Oy wonder: Multi-talented Matisyahu

TALK ABOUT MUSIC being a religious experience. Matisyahu fuses rap, beatboxing and hip-hop in general with the more traditional vocal disciplines of jazz's scat singing and Judaism's hazzan style of songful prayer. He'll play Portland next week with The Dirty Heads and Moon Taxi.

Art and Theater: Wood portraits reunite to celebrate artist

FRIENDS AND FANS celebrate the life of the late Maine artist Bryce Muir in an exhibition at Merrymeeting Arts Center in Bowdoinham through September. On Sunday, the arts center hosts the Bryce Wooden Portrait Reunion, which will bring together more than three dozen portraits that Muir made in wood. Photographer Jack Montgomery will photograph each piece with its owner and model.

Et Cetera: Pirates make a splash at Fort Knox

IF YOU'VE never been to historic Fort Knox in Prospect, Saturday would be a good time to visit. The professional Pirates of the Dark Rose will "attack" the fort -- complete with cannon fire! -- and visitors are invited to take part in a treasure hunt and a pirate parade.

A PAIR of Peaks Island authors make the trek over to the mainland for a reading and book signing. Fran Houston will talk about her book, "For the Love of Peaks," while Nancy 3. Hoffman, director and curator of the Peaks Island Umbrella Cover Museum, will present "Uncovered and Exposed -- A Guide to the Umbrella Cover Museum."
