Indie Film: Mocking zombies, local films, a film fest ... and horror!

It's a busy next few months on the Portland film scene. Check it out -- and plan ahead.

Friday: “Sunset Scavenger.” Space brings us another singular cinematic experience with Bill Daniel’s documentary/event, an imagist depiction of the end of the fossil fuel era. Oh, and did I mention the film will be projected on the sails of Daniel’s converted 1984 Ford Club Wagon “Sailvan?”

Friday: “The Kids Are All Right.” Julianne Moore and Annette Bening play the most loving, warm, sexy married lesbians you’ve ever seen.
Monday: The Geek Chorus presents "Night of the Living Dead." It's the first Monday of the month, and that means Geno's, 625 Congress St., is hosting Portland's own "Mystery Science Theater 3000"-style movie mock-fest.
This month should be interesting, as the boys take on the largely beloved George Romero zombie classic. Will they find the funny, or be devoured by their own hubris?
Tuesday to Aug. 14: It's the KahBang Film Festival (kahbang.com). There's a new player on the Maine film festival scene, and the first annual Kahbang Film Fest boasts an impressive lineup of movies, both home-grown and from away.
Local films include Allen Cognata's "The Putt Putt Syndrome," Allen Baldwin's "Up Up Down Down" and many more.
Aug. 9: Fun Box Monster Emporium begins its monthly Local Movie Night with a screening of director Andy Davis' trippy horror film "Adelle."
September: Portland Short Film Festival. The Nickelodeon, One Temple St., hosts this eclectic collection of local short films in the documentary, animation and feature categories. Aug. 23 is the deadline, and submissions can be sent to the Nickelodeon, c/o Nick employee and local film guru Eddy Bolz.
Sept. 27: The Fun Box Monster Emporium Movie Night at Geno's brings the original Leatherface, Gunnar Hansen, to Portland for a screening of the horror classic, "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre."
Oct. 28-29: "Damnationland -- The Way Life Should Bleed!" Local filmmakers such as Baldwin ("Up Up Down Down," "12 Steps Outside"), Christian Matzke and Sarah Tarling Matzke ("Nyarlathotep," "An Imperfect Solution"), Kate Kaminski and Betsy Carson (local Web series "Willard Beach"), Torrey Alan Johnson and Derek Gierhan ("Fumble") and many others are hard at work making their parts of this Maine-based horror anthology extravaganza. Look for it to screen at the Nickelodeon and Movies at the Museum at the Portland Museum of Art.
Sometime this year: Limerick filmmaker Shawn French's indie horror film "The Wrong House" has been picked up for worldwide distribution (DVD and Blu-ray) by Elite Entertainment. Watch www.thewronghousemovie.com for details.
