Just such an opportunity will be presented Saturday night at Portland's Merrill Auditorium during the NAACP Portland Branch's Martin Luther King Jr. Observance Music and Gospel Concert.
Seven musical acts will take the stage in a concert designed to honor King's idea of a "beloved community" where all children feel safe and loved, said Rachel Talbot Ross, president of NAACP Portland.
"Given the proliferation of violence targeting our children, this is an opportunity to say we are committed to ending it and need to take greater care in protecting them," said Ross.
Three out of the seven acts performing are made up of youth performers.
The performers scheduled to perform Saturday consist of the Seventh-day Adventist Children's Choir, the Pihcintu Multinational Children's Chorus, the University of Southern Maine Chamber Singers, the Green Memorial AME Zion Church, Rock My Soul, United for Christ and Lady Zen.
