Don’t let the mercury fool you, because things are heating up this weekend. Portland’s Downtown District’s “Portland on Ice” winter festival kicks off on Friday and runs through Feb. 2.
The second night of Portland Harbor Hotel’s Ice Bar gets things started from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday. Tickets to this event are sold out, but are still available for Thursday night. Go to brownpapertickets.com.

Asylum plays host from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday to the free “Strike a Chord: A Music Discovery Funhouse.” Co-presented by Portland’s Downtown District and the Portland Music Foundation, attendees will enjoy interactive music exhibits from local studios, labels, musicians, photographers and others.
There will also be opportunities for families, aspiring musicians and anyone who just wants to get their groove on to jam in the instrument petting zoo. Other attractions include a design-your-own poster session, a local music listening station and a rock ‘n’ roll photo booth. DJs will be spinning all day, and at 3 p.m., an open mic will be professionally recorded. Participants will leave with a CD of their performance.
It’s only fitting that two Portland Pirates games are part of “Portland on Ice.” Those pucks drop on Feb. 1 and Feb. 2. Visit portlandpirates.com for ticket information.
The free First Friday Art Walk is another element of the festival, and that’s scheduled for 5 to 8 p.m. Feb. 1.
Bundle up and see art happen in front of your eyes during a free ice sculpture demonstration in Post Office Park at noon Feb. 2.
The rest of “Portland On Ice” is predominantly musical performances at venues all over the city. Just about every genre will be represented, from classical and rock to funk and much more. Some of the bigger shows are Martin Sexton at the State Theatre on Friday, The Gin Blossoms on Saturday at Asylum, and Tift Merritt on Wednesday at One Longfellow Square.
