MONDAY

Penobscot Celebration / Old Town and Indian Island

The work of removing the 1,000-foot, 200-year-old Great Works Dam is part of an effort to let the river flow freely to the Gulf of Maine. The Penobscot River Restoration Trust is organizing events throughout the day to celebrate, from 9:30 a.m. until late afternoon. High points include remarks by Ken Salazar, Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior; a community lunch at 11:30 a.m. hosted by the Penobscot Indian Nation; and Penobscot Indian Nation traditional drumming following remarks from other dignitaries. TUESDAY

Pemaquid Paddlers / 9 a.m. in Jefferson

This week's paddle by the wandering water travelers in the midcoast region is around Damariscotta Lake State Park. The put-in is in the park, which is located off Route 32 in Jefferson. Gates to the park open at 9 a.m. and there is a $4 entrance fee. The trip will begin at 9:30 a.m. Participants must provide their own canoe or kayak, and wear a life jacket. All trips are free and open to the public. Paddle is held rain or shine. For more information, call John Will at 677-6380.

WEDNESDAY

Cathance River Tour / 8:30 a.m. in Topsham

Join Merrymeeting Audubon and the Stanton Bird Club for a tour of the Cathance River Preserve. Come scout for towhees, sparrows, warblers and woodpeckers. Free and open to the public. Meet at the Highland Golf Course for a carpool to the trail. Take Route 196 and turn into the Highland Green Community on the north side of the highway. For information, call Carol Jack at 729-0220.

SATURDAY

Mountain Tales / 8 p.m., Pinkham Notch, N.H.

The Appalachian Mountain Club's free evening program series continues this week. The AMC Pinkham Notch Visitor Center is located on Route 16. For more information, call 603-466-2727.
