The Georges River Land Trust is leading a paddle outing on the middle section of the St. Georges River. Join land trust volunteer and devoted paddler Dick Matlack, who will lead canoeists and kayakers on this undeveloped section of the river south from Warren to the Middle Road bridge and back. Participants should bring a boat, paddles, life jackets, lunch and water. Registration is required. Call 594-5166.

Woodfire Fun

The Viles Arboretum is the location of a wood-fire oven-building demonstration. Gain hands-on experience constructing an authentic clay wood oven. The cost is $35 per person. The workshop runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the arboretum at 153 Hospital Street. Space is limited, so register at 626-7989.

Youth Field Day

The Phippsburg Sportsmen’s Association is holding its annual youth field day. Young outdoors fans can come learn archery, fly casting, target shooting, animal tracking and kayaking. Island Hopping

Portland Trails is hosting an evening ferry trip. Brian Marcaurelle, program director of the Maine Island Trail Association, leads a ferry trip to explore the Casco Bay islands. The cost is $25. Portland Trails is offering its Discovery Trek program from July through September on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month. Learn about the city’s history and trails. Most events will start between 5 and 5:30 p.m. and last up to two hours. Suggested donation is $7. See www.trails.org.
