LONDON – Prince Harry said Friday he will take part in a race to the South Pole later this year, leading a team of wounded British military personnel against counterparts from Australia, Canada and the United States.
In a tongue-in-cheek challenge issued at a news conference, the 28-year-old royal warned his competitors that the Brits would have some tea “ready for you when you join us at the Pole.”
Harry and his fellow Walking With The Wounded teammates will participate in the 208-mile South Pole Allied Challenge in November and December of this year.
That may be the height of the Antarctic summer, but conditions will still be bitterly cold. The four-week expedition will see racers drag sleds weighing more than 150 pounds and face extreme temperatures and savage winds.
Harry has already taken part in one expedition with Walking With The Wounded, a charity which raises funds and keeps injured servicemen and women in the public eye through feats of endurance.
In 2011, he took part in the charity’s North Pole trek, but had to withdraw earlier to attend his brother Prince William’s wedding to Kate Middleton.
Adventurer Inge Solheim will be the guide for the American team from Soldiers to Summits, which is made up of Mark Wise from Colorado Springs, Colo., Therese Frentz from Del Rio, Texas, Margaux Mange from Lakewood, Colo., and Ivan Castro from Raeford, N.C.
Kardashian marriage ends in divorce court
LOS ANGELES – The marriage of Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries, which began with a storybook wedding, ended Friday in a grim courtroom with a judge approving a divorce settlement after a protracted legal battle between the former couple.
“I think this is a reasonable way to resolve this case,” said Superior Court Judge Hank Goldberg, who did not disclose terms of the settlement.
“Ms. Kardashian, is this your signature?” the judge asked her as he perused a three-page settlement agreement.
“Yes,” she replied.
Kardashian continued to answer yes when the judge asked if she had discussed the matter with her attorney and understood that there would be no trial.
“During your marriage did irreconcilable differences occur?” the judge asked.
“Yes,” said Kardashian.
“Is there any way your marriage can be saved?” he asked.
“No,” said Kardashian.
She married the NBA player in a high-profile wedding in August 2011. She filed for divorce later that year.
Van Dyke asks for advice to treat ailment
LOS ANGELES – Dick Van Dyke is seeing doctors for an undiagnosed health problem, and he’s seeking advice online as well.
“My head bangs every time I lay down,” the 87-year-old actor posted on his Twitter account.
“I’ve had every test come back that I’m perfectly healthy. Anybody got any ideas?”
Bob Palmer, a spokesman for Van Dyke, said Thursday that he’s undergoing tests for “cranial throbbing” that’s causing him to lose sleep.
The sensation occurs when Van Dyke lies down, and scans and other tests have yet to yield a diagnosis, Palmer said.
Van Dyke drew a number of responses to his tweet for help Wednesday, including questions about what’s been done so far for the problem he described as stubborn.
“It has been going on for 7 years. I’ve had every test you can think of,” he replied, including an MRI and spinal tap.
