Religion Calendar

Yard and bake sale with cookout, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., First Congregational Church, 167 Black Point Road, Scarborough.

Craft and bake sale, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., North Sebago Methodist Church, Route 114, North Sebago.

Anniversary Mass, 6 p.m., celebrating the 40th anniversary of the ordination of Monsignor Michael Henchal, pastor of St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish in Scarborough, St. Bartholomew Parish in Cape Elizabeth, and Holy Cross and St. John the Evangelist parishes in South Portland. The Mass will be said at St. Bartholomew Church, 8 Two Lights Road, Cape Elizabeth, and a reception will follow.

Monsignor Henchal received a B.A. in philosophy from the University of Ottawa and a Bachelor of Sacred Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome before being ordained by the Most Rev. Peter L. Gerety, the Eighth Bishop of Portland, at St. Joseph Church in Lewiston on July 14, 1973. Monsignor Henchal also earned a master's degree in liturgical studies and a licentiate in canon law from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Over his 40 years of ministry in the Diocese of Portland, Monsignor Henchal has served at parishes in Rumford, Portland, Pittsfield, Jay and Sanford as well as his current assignment.


"Life As I Hear It," 4 p.m., jazz piano with Dan Strange and his wife, violinist Ashley Liberty. Raymond Village Community Church, 27 Main St., Raymond. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for students/seniors and $5 for children 5 and under.

"A Finished Heart," 7:30 p.m., free performance which deals with end of life issues. The Temple at Ocean Park.

July 20

Holy Ground Coffee House, 6:30 p.m., featuring Brads Trio with Dreaming in Purple. Church of the Holy Spirit, 1047 Congress St., Portland. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. Admission is free with donations accepted. A meal and goodies are available for a small charge. Call 874-9779 for details.
