AUG. 25: This image distributed by Islamic State militants on social media purports to show the destruction of a Roman-era temple in the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra. Syria's antiquities chief Maamoun Abdulkarim told Reuters the images did appear to show the destruction of the ancient Baal Shamin temple and correlated with descriptions given by residents of the explosion detonated there on Sunday. Five photos were distributed on social media showing explosives being carried inside, being planted around the walls of the temple, a large blast and then rubble.
AUG. 26: Hungarian police nearby watch as Syrian migrants climb under a fence to enter Hungary at the Hungarian-Serbian border near Roszke. Hungary's government has started to construct a 110-mile-long fence on its border with Serbia in order to halt the massive flow of migrants who enter the EU via Hungary and head to western Europe.
AUG. 26: Paratroopers take part in an exercise of the U.S. Army Global Response Force in Hohenfels, Germany. Approximately 5,000 soldiers from 11 NATO nations participated in simultaneous airborne operations across Germany, Bulgaria, Italy and Romania called "Exercise Swift Response." It was the largest Allied airborne training in Europe since the end of the Cold War.
AUG. 26: Two men dive into a puddle of squashed tomatoes during the annual "tomatina" tomato fight fiesta in the village of Bunol, outside Valencia, Spain. The streets of the eastern Spanish town are awash with red pulp as thousands of people pelt each other with tomatoes in the annual battle that has become a major tourist attraction. Trucks dump 150 tons of ripe tomatoes for some 22,000 participants, many from abroad, to throw during the hour-long morning festivities.
AUG. 27: A Thai veterinarian takes a picture of a 2-year-old orangutan during a health examination at Kao Pratubchang Conservation Centre in Ratchaburi, Thailand. Thai veterinarians from the Department of National Park Wildlife and Plant Conservation conducted a health check of 14 orangutans to prepare them for repatriation to their country of origin, Indonesia. Most of the Sumatran and Borneo Kalimantan orangutans were confiscated from entertainment businesses in Thailand's Phuket province since 2008. Authorities said the orangutans are being examined to ensure they are free from diseases such as rabies, foot and mouth disease, tuberculosis, hepatitis and herpes. The orangutans are expected to return to Indonesia in September.
