Fire from welding torch destroys garage, two cars

A fast-moving fire that was started by a welding torch destroyed a three-car garage in Bremen on Monday afternoon, along with two vintage sports cars.

Fire Chief Fern Poland said the fire started around 3:45 p.m. in the garage at 274 Turner Road. Roger Williams was working in the garage on imported cars that he collects as a hobby.

Williams’ wife, Jackie, said her husband was welding a frame on one of the cars when a problem with the car’s gas line sparked the fire. The fire destroyed a 1972 Fiat and a 1974 Porsche along with a 1983 Volvo that she described as a car they drove around town.

The fire also destroyed the garage, which was built recently. Their home, which is several feet from the garage, was not damaged by the fire. The couple said the vehicles were valued at about $13,000.

Florida woman charged over incident at airport

A Florida woman who is accused of throwing things and shouting obscenities over a delayed flight faces charges in Bangor.

Police said Janet Dinardi, 54, of Nokomis, Fla., ignored an officer’s warning Sunday to settle down before Allegiant Air informed officers that the unruly passenger would not be allowed on her flight to Florida.

Officers escorted her from Bangor International Airport and charged her with criminal trespass and disorderly conduct. Dinardi posted bail and is due to be arraigned in February.

York woman facing charge after vehicle lands on pond

A York woman was charged with operating under the influence after she lost control of the car she was driving about 1:48 a.m. Monday on Long Beach Avenue.

The northbound Volvo driven by Mary Barnstead, 21, crossed the center line, hit a sign for the Lobster Cove restaurant, rolled down an embankment and landed on its roof on a frozen pond, police said.

The pond’s ice did not break and rescuers got to Barnstead and took her to the hospital for treatment. When she was released, police arrested her and charged her with drunken driving.
