Governor, first lady honor National Guard soldiers

Gov. Paul LePage and first lady Ann LePage honored Maine National Guard soldiers who recently returned from a nearly year-long deployment in Afghanistan.

Eight soldiers of the Detachment 14 Operational Support Airlift Command unit were thanked for their service during a Freedom Salute ceremony Sunday in Bangor, where the unit is stationed.

LePage and Adj. Gen. James Campbell publicly recognized the sacrifice of the soldiers, their families and their employers and friends during their deployment.

The governor told the soldiers that he and the state are proud of them and their service to Maine and the country.

Small town loses the use of its only snowplow

A small Maine town on the Canadian border has lost the use of its only snowplow.

Gary Campbell was driving the plow Sunday when it hit a crevice, spun around and flipped onto its side.

Campbell was not injured, but the 2003 International truck sustained about $5,000 in damage, the Bangor Daily News reported.

The Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office says officials are making arrangements to have the roads in this town of about 460 people plowed while the truck is being repaired.

Officials say the cause of the accident is still being investigated but speed does not appear to be a factor.
