The Associated Press

MANCHESTER, Vt. — Three women from Maine, one from New Hampshire and one from Vermont will be among 200 female pilots who are being honored today with the Congressional Gold Medal for their World War II service during a ceremony in Washington.

Edith Beal of Bridgton, Maine, Betty Brown of Showhegan, Maine, and Phyllis Paradis of Bass Harbor, Maine, Patricia Kenworthy Nuckol of Manchester, Vt., and Teresa Paul of Concord, N.H., are among more than 1,000 women to graduate from the Women Airforce Service Pilots training program during World War II.

Their primary mission was to fly noncombat missions in the United States.

About 200 of the estimated 300 surviving pilots are expected to attend the ceremony on Capitol Hill.
