PORTLAND — Thirty-eight people are being naturalized as new U.S. citizens at a special ceremony today at Lyman Moore Middle School in Portland.
The candidates originate from locations as far-flung as Argentina and Cameroon, India and Ireland, Somalia and Sudan, and Pakistan and Iraq.
During today’s ceremony, students will sing the Star Spangled Banner, recite the Pledge of Allegiance and read a sonnet that’s engraved at the Statue of Liberty site. There also will performances by the sixth grade chorus and middle school band.
The keynote speaker will be Grace Valenzuela, director of the Multilingual & Multicultural Center in Portland Public Schools.
