Number of customers without power in Maine drops to 5,300

Central Maine Power says most of the outages are in York and Cumberland counties.

PORTLAND  — Central Maine Power Co. has restored electricity to all but 5,375 customers, almost all of them in York and Cumberland counties.

The state's largest utility started the day with some 16,000 still without power after gusting wind and heavy rain from Hurricane Sandy downed trees and branches, damaging electrical equipment.

Typically, the utility concentrates repair efforts on large areas that lack power, so those remaining tend to be isolated outages affecting relatively few customers.

While Cumberland and York have the most remaining outages they also have the most customers, with 154,211 and 114,802, respectively, the utility said.

CMP said it expects to have power restored to everyone in its service area by late tonight.
