WOOLWICH — Alcohol and speed have been identified by police as factors in a single-car crash that claimed the life of a 59-year-old Woolwich man Wednesday night.

Sagadahoc County Sheriff Joel A. Merry said deputies from his office responded at 5:17 p.m. to the report of a vehicle that had gone off Gray Corner Road.

When deputies arrived, they found Duane K. York inside his four-door 2001 Nissan sedan. Merry said York, who died in the crash, appears to have lost control of his car and gone off the road before hitting a large pine tree.

York, who was about two miles from his home, was not wearing a seatbelt.

“Speed and alcohol are considered as contributing factors,” Merry said in a press release.

Merry said the investigation will continue, as officers attempt to reconstruct his whereabouts prior to the crash.
