Augusta bicyclist killed in apparent hit-and-run

AUGUSTA — Police are investigating an apparent hit-and-run crash that killed a bicyclist this afternoon.

A passerby found a man lying on underneath a damaged bicycle around 1:15 p.m. on Ward Road near the intersection with Hayes Road, police said. No other vehicle was in the area.

Lt. Christopher Massey of the Augusta Police Department confirmed the death, but withheld the victim's identity pending notification of family members.

Police have called for an accident reconstructionist from the Maine State Police. Additional details were not immediately available.
