BRIDGTON — One person is dead after a police officer tried to stop a speeding vehicle this afternoon.

Officer Josh Muise attempted to stop the vehicle for speeding on Willis Park Road in Bridgton around 12:30 p.m. today, according to a statement issued by Bridgton police.

The vehicle accelerated away from the police cruiser on Route 302, passing several vehicles at high speed.

Witnesses said the vehicle turned onto Kansas Road while maintaining a high rate of speed.
The driver, who was alone, lost control of the vehicle, which went airborne before hitting a tree.

Police said the driver died in the crash. They are not releasing the driver’s name tonight pending notification of relatives.

The police statement did not say whether the crash was the result of a high speed chase, or whether the driver was a man or woman.

Bridgton Police Chief Kevin Schofield is expected to provide more details about the crash on Monday.
